Battered Girlfriend/Boyfriend

So it's amazingly common how many women are being battered by their husbands/boyfriends out there. My friend once told me that she had a relationship where her boyfriend used to bang her head against the car window if they get into an argument while he was driving. He would hold her arm tight until she bruises, and he would sometimes actually hit her. I myself have fortunately never been in such a relationship, although there was a time that I got into a fight with my boyfriend in the stairwell of his friend's apartment building. I was hitting him and he was blocking and everything and I think I ruined his shirt by stretching the neck. Anyway, that was the worst fight we've ever had to date, and I hope it will never happen again. Who here has ever been/or is actually in one at the moment? Do you go for counselling or therapy for it? How can people choose to stay in such relationships?
