One of the freeware I like most is "What's Running". It is a utility that let you see what processes are running in your system. Once a computer starts running, it inevitably loads up some services and dlls. Too many of them running at the same time make the machine runs like a snail. And this freeware, once activated, will show you all the processes, service, modules etc running underneath the OS. Youn may then be able to disable the unecessary services or processes. This may help your system run faster and react to commands more instantly.

My preferred freeware is my browser Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1 and also winrar to deal with archive files and FileZilla for FTP ... and a lot of others. About "What's Running" - you can see what process are runing on your computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and chose Processes tab if you are using WinXP; and it's not good to stop the processes that are running under OS
