windows is so popular because it has high compatibility for computer software, there is very little software that wont run on windows, also microsoft seem to have cornered the market to an extent so the more people that use windows the better and the more it does the better. operating systems like linux and unix and mac are not so popular because many manufacturers tend to make software mostly for windows but if they all made software for say linux for instance then linux would probably be more popular. they say linux is safer than windows and unix and other operating systems but thats mainly down to the fact not as much software is available for it and theres less risk of getting viruses with it because of this, the less software available the less likely a hacker or virus making person is going to try and target it. they will target the more popular to make more damage of course.

I agree with totalguy. I think compatibility is the main thing. If you were to buy not so much with a mac but say linux you would have a harder time finding compatible software and it might be less user friendly depending on if you know what you are doing or not.

hey!!Why windows is popular lemme tell u ............. Without knowing a language u cant able speak nd understand like that you can do any work without knowing how to do .....But in casw "WINDOWS XP" its possible without knowing the working of computer u can work with Windows Xp.... its user friendly Os ...... altz if you dnt knwing anything about computer or OS atlz u can see ns do with that ........

thas bcos the overall team of microsoft works....and they a\have the reall good product to offer and lastly..it's the esiet job in the world to create a pirated copy of windows...so its ppular...

see good question ! windows is popular because of its user friendly feature ! and yeah the fast and accurate result ! windows is not only popular to home users but it is from home to enterprise also ! but the competents are there in market which are doing R& D fastly ! you would never know who can come up with new idea soon !

It is friendly user.It requires no more knowledge of computer.Everything is step wise step.A literate person with mere knowhow can operate windows.Good luck.

Firstly, they had much money to promote their products. Second, they had the GUI so people like to use. Third, many softwares and hardwares support Windows only.

IBM had an operating system. Gary Kildall's DR-DOS was good. HP had an operating system! And how about Geoworks. Linux is free, for crying out loud. Microsoft runs pcs because they've marketed their product. They offer vritually free windows programs for manufacturers. Dell doesn't pay what we do for windows, believe me! A funny thing about DR-DOS, microsoft updated some of their programs so it wouldn't work under DR-DOS. This is why gates is attributed with the term "lets call this bug a feature!"
