jillbeth had some great information. Don't just get a dog because it's cute. Look at what type of breed would fit into your home and your family.
I have two dogs. I have a 6 yo Shih-tzu named Abby-gale. I picked them name because it was one my son could say.
I also have an 8 month old American Bulldog named Takara, it is Japanese meaning Treasure.
Both dogs are great family dogs. The bulldog however good with kids is still in the puppy stage and doesn't know her own size or strenth - lol.

I like dogs very much. They are cute, obediant and loyal. Very nice to have them and play with them. I have a dog at home that jumps at me whenever I get back to my home. It licks my legs and love playing with me.
My dogs name is Picky.

I own a miniature daushound...her name is TOO LONG TOOTIE, but she prefers just plain tootie! I also own a full blood poodle her name is CARLA'S BUFFERINA, buffy for short. My poodle is 14 and has been a total joy to me. My tootie is 1 and the sweetest thing ever! Any dog you get will respond to lots of love nd give it back to you ten fold.

I have a shpeherd/chow mix named Martha, a chihuahua mix named Esther, and we adopted a beagle/sheltie mix named Twix.
When you choose a dog there are lots of things to consider:
How much room do you have? Big dogs need lots of room to run and play. If you live in an apartment or small house you will probably want a small dog.
Do you have kids or other people in your home? Some breeda are fond of kids and some aren't. If you have toddlers in your home, a big dog might accidentally knock them down, and kids can hurt toy dogs without meaning to.
Some dogs are one-person dogs and some are family dogs.
How much time do you want to spend grooming your dog? Some require a lot more care than others.
I suggest you visit the Humane Society website, they have lots of information on the different breeds of dogs, or talk to your vet. I am sure the rest of myLot will give you some good advice on the different breeds!
As for names, it is good to give a dog a name with an R sound in it, they will respond to it better because it is the sound a dog naturally makes.
