Well you shouldn't ask me, because I'm a bit preconditioned as you'll notice... :-) Anyway, in their own way and style I think each of them were as good as the other ... Ramones were first though !

I hate to ride the fence on this one, but it's impossible for true fans to decide. Both bands were great to be sure, the Clash was only around for a few years (5-6 depending on who you ask), while the ramones played a relentless tour schedule for 25 years, and put out over a dozen studio albums, most of which were pretty darn good. The Ramones were fairly apolitical, or even anti-political until the last few years, while the Clash were activists, politicos in their own rights. I love both bands and personally I like the Ramones a little better, but that doesn't mean I really think they are "the greatest" and the Clash isn't "the greatest" , both are.

They're both good but the Clash are better because they had more of a range of musical styles and more depth in their song subjects. The Clash (especially Joe) were fans and inspired by The Ramones, there's a story in the Ramones anthology book about the Clash meeting the Ramones before a concert, telling them that they were a band but they weren't very good yet, and being told in responce not to worry about that because they weren't either and if they waited until they were good they'd never get on stage. One of Joes last interviews was talking about the band for the End Of The Century documentary.

I wouldn't say one's better than the other since they're both great, but I have to say that I tend to like The Clash more.

Ramones of course! the Clash would´ve have started playing if it was´nt for the Ramones fist gig in London on the 4th of July 1976. The Clash sang about how bored they were with the USA on thier first album, then they made a Levis commercial for the same country some years later. "We´re selling jeans for the U.S.A"
