What do you want to hear?

When you go to see a local band play live, what do you want to hear, covers or originals? Or perhaps a mix of both? Why?

I want to hear original material. I'm not there to see a cover band. If they play a couple of covers of songs they've "made their own", then that's fine. But I want my bands to have original material first and foremost.

I completely agree with you, and thank you for your response. Our band will be playing live very soon, and I'm trying to gauge what non-musician's musical interest is.

I don't want to hear anything that sux. You know if its cool or not. Free bird is not cool. Some might like it. Some might want to hear it. But it isn't cool. There are a lot of songs that I have refused to learn. Although I have played it a hundred times on stage I have never learned free bird. Its that easy and it is boring. If the musician is bored... the crowd is bored regardless if they want to hear it or not.

I hear ya on that! We already discussed when the band started a year ago... NO FREEBIRD! I'm highly into progressive rock (porcupine tree, dream theater, indukti, and the like) Alot of their songs are "too" long for a normal audience, unless they are there to hear specifically that. So we combine all our influences together, creating an awesome blend, and still highly progressive. It's incredibly enjoyable for us, and I know the audience is gonna love it! First show is in May, I can't wait, all originals! :D

When I go to see a band play I like to hear a mix of both covers and originals (more coversa than originals though). With covers I am able to sing along which is fun but with originals it brings something new that I haven't heard before, which is exciting.

Original music all the way. I'm not interested in going out to hear cover songs. I'd rather go and see a live band and hear their songs. The songs that they are passionate about and have written. That's one of the main reasons I love the Melbourne (Australia) music scene. Every night of the week you can go out and see quality, original live music. There are some amazing artists out there and I want to hear their music...

That's awesome. I'd love to be in an area with that taking place. Around here (Eastern Ohio) all we have are cover bands. Most are pretty pathetic too, which is even worse.

A good mix offcourse. Some good own things, a band has to have that identity, also when they are playing covers, some songs you can add things or make them sound bigger or less, you can play with that..

Originals, because it's a showcase of the band's creativity. Cover bands should be best saved for dances, weddings, and other events where their presence isn't the primary attraction. I do love when a band or artist can do a great cover, though. It's really interesting to see how one song can be interpreted by multiple musicians...especially when done well.

I totally agree with you. I think that bands should perform mainly their material, and occasionally pay some tribute by a well done cover to some of their influences.

I want to hear some cover songs! I also want original songs but the popular songs of the band that I am watching so that I could also go to the flow of the music!

I like a combination, although covers are good so you can sing along, fresh material is good too. A band producing their own material makes them easier to sell in a very competitive market.

Doesn't really matter to me, as long as they do it good.

I want to hear band's play on the edge- like Deep Purple when they're really flying and at that point it doesn't matter whether its original or cover they'll tear it to pieces and remake it on the spot anyway, but most bands can't do that so I am really looking for original music - even if I don't particularly like it I can appreciate the effort and time taken to create it and if I want to hear covers I'll go to the disco (not likely) :-)
