Soccer or Football

erm... that do you think soccer or football?
not many uses soccer as a word of football....
but football many countries used it .... except us.?
they called rugby as football... why they dosent call it
rUgby?

in my country (indonesia) they call sepakbola
in england they call football
in usa they call soccer
in germany they call fussball
in holland they call voetball
in think we can use a word "soccer" so we have same persepcion about this sports...agree

The German 'fussball' and Dutch 'voetball' both translate as football - exactly the same as what we say in England - it's not different - so why should we call it something different?

The proper word is football - I don't know where the word soccer came from but it's not right and it's not used anywhere in Europe where the game as we know it has been played since the 19th century when the Football Association was set up in England with more or less the same rules that apply today (some tweaking to those rules in the early 1960's). American 'football' is more or less rugby with lots of padding and helmets - the game of rugby was invented in England at Rugby School. Why the Americans felt the need to change the name of an already very established sport is beyond me and I find it pretty irritating. Football is NOT soccer and never will be on this side of the pond.
