There are so many ways. You could download an infected file thinking that it's a legitimate program. You can also get them from e-mail attachments and even just by going to a malicious web site. Virus writers often find exploits in windows and Internet Explorer that allow them to inject the code into your system without you even having to do anything in some cases.

there are many ways it can come in from. the internet via emails, browsers, programs people send you but have the virus code embedded in it etc.
it can also come via flash drive, floppy disks. basically any new file other than those created on that machine itself has a potential of carrying a virus. it is important to have a good anti virus software to protect the system.

It is not always possible to determine exactly where the infection occured, as there are many possibilities. Viruses are created & distributed via Email, the World wide web and also on infected diskettes/flash disks.
For example, a virus may infect our pC over the internet through downloading a file froma page. Simple visiting a website would be another, a banner on the page could be running java and send the infection smply by visiting the site.
Sometimes, a virus may also attach itself to an email. Even if an email dsnt start a virus, if it sent to a PC with the vrus itself to the attachment. when the email is forwarded to the next recipient, there wll be risk for the infection.
Hope i helped you with your question!;-)

Any program run on your machine brought in from an external source can result in a viral infection. The list of sources includes the obvious (executable programs) but also includes some things that might not be so apparantly candidates. Screen savers, font files, and any file that run another program is capable of installing a virus (MS ofice macros are a good example of this kind of potential problem).

Dude virus can be injected in tour pc through lo of anti-virus evasion techniques. For example there is a concept called binders. By this technique when you inject a file it will automatically execute two or more files then finally your system may be affected.
