IPCC report on GLOBAL WARMING - we must act now!

The IPCC report on global warming confirms what many people have known for years. We have raped the planet of it's resources and pumped so much CO2 into the atmosphere that we have affected the gloabl temperature.
The matter has become so serious that Richard Branson and Al Gore are offering a $25 million prize for anyone who can come up with a solution.
I find it hard to believe that many people are still in denial and think that global warming isn't happening.

Actually stuff is being done, but no one is reporting it, because the newspapers prefer scary headlines of the "you must all live like you are in the stone age" rather than report the unsexy things that are being done that will have a bigger impact on the climate than if we all switched to low-energy light bulbs.
For instance, in December 2006, all the member states of the EU agreed to bring airlines into the carbon trading scheme, which means that the airlines will be capped as to how much CO2 they can produce and will have to offset this by planting trees, or by switching to more efficient planes or purchasing credits from low-emitters.
Here's the important bit: this applies to all flights within the EU from 2011 and all flights TO and FROM the EU by 2012. Given that practically every airline on earth flies to Europe, ALL the airlines in the world will have to reduce their CO2 emmissions! And they have just five years to make the changes - some smart airlines will be ordering more efficient planes now (because of the time it takes to make them).
This is massive, but is getting no coverage in the press. The press continues to focus on punishing people in Britain (it's almost as though they are on a mission to make tackling climate change as unpleasant as possible), even though if we all cycled everywhere, the emissions saved will be used up in a couple of days by the rest of the world, if the other countries don't do anything too.
The only solution is multilateral agreements between governments such as the one the EU just agreed. Trying to put everything on individuals while corporations get off scott free doesn't work. Trying to put all the onus on little Britain while the rest of the world does nothing won't work. And silver bullet solutions, such as the one Richard branson is seeking don't exist.
The only solution is a network of treaties between countries covering loads of things - not just airlines, but energy power stations, and manufacturing.
If you want to read more on the EU directive, see
http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/06/1862&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN
BTW, the Americans are very upset about the EU directive because it applies to their planes too. There'll be a massive fight coming up, which is why publicity is needed. The EU can only win this if public opinion is behind it.

Many thanks for your response, that is probably the best response to a discussion I have ever had on MyLot.
Thats interesting news about the EU directive, it's the first I've heard of it. I'm amazed that something as important as that has recieved so little press attention, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Thanks. I'm interested in environmental issues and I think forums like MyLot could be used to correct mis-information that is out there - especially as this is an international forum and many countries simply don't get the correct information from the press.
I personally think that all the press wants to do is scare people silly about how difficult it will be to tackle climate change, so that it will spark protests, which the press then gleefully reports! And the Murdoch press will not report anything that goes against American interests (as this EU directive does).
I think climate change can be tackled quite easily through multi-lateral agreements, and it needn't impact the quality of people's lives. All we need to do is put correct information out there so that people can calmly give backing to their governments to make the treaties. Unfortunately there is nothing calm about the debate so far!

I share your view that we can make a difference. The challenge is that like many things in life money and big business play a big part in the process. I find it comforting to know that people such as yourself are helping to inform the world about the facts rather than the spin that is applied by the media.
