Have you ever done it? I was wondering if you have to dry out the pit and I would like to know the best way to root the pit to produce the best plant. Thanks!

I'm really disappointed that you've got no responses to this question. I, too, have wanted to know the best way to grow an avocado plant from seed. I tried it once long ago and was unsuccessful, I don't know what I did wrong. I'll have to do some more research on this and get back to you!

I did plant avacado seed. I washed it and planted it directly into the soil. I grew about 4 inches tall; and then stopped growing. eventually, our dog ate it! I would also like to know why it stopped growing.

How fun. I have always wanted to try this but never knew I could. Is it just the avacados you get from the grocer or do you need to get them from a farmer? Will it ever give off any fruit? I love to have these fun plant in my home but it is extra fun when you get food from it.

Well, if it DID grow, it wouldn't actually be a plant, but a tree. Avocados grow on trees, not plants. My guess is that you wouldn't get any avocados from it while it's small enough to fit inside your house. Unfortunately, I have no tips for trying to grow one. I suggest Googling it and seeing what you can find on the internet. Good luck to anyone trying to grow an avocado tree.

I've heard that you just get a nice plant from the pit of your avocado fruit, so I thought that this would be a nice thing to do at home. :) I guess if you live in a climate where you could plant it outside and it could be a large tree, it could possibly produce fruit, but I'm just guessing.

Avocado tree - planted from seed
I just found your question about growing an avocado from the pit. We did this a couple of years ago. It got about 3 ft tall then white flies got to it. We just put about 3 tooth picks around the sides and put it into a glass of water. You want to put pointed end up. When you get a long root (we had 2) and the trunk starts to grow put it into a large pot of soil. Keep it watered and in the sun.

I never had real success with the toothpicks and water. This season I planted several straight in the soil, and most of them germinated. They've grown to about 30cms at this point and seems fine.
