Long Hair or Short Hair

For the last four years I have worn my hair short. I visit my hair stylist about once every 8-10 weeks to have my hair cut and styled. Up until four years ago I had always worn my hair long, sometimes styled around the face, sometimes straight with no style.
I have been thinking about letting my hair grow out again. Everytime I see someone with long hair I get envious. The feedback I get from many on how good my hair looks short makes me think that I shouldn't let it grow out. But, if I have it styled to frame my face maybe I could let it grow long again.
Many people believe that women over 40 should wear their hair short. Why is that? Should women 40 and over play into that belief?

I wouldn't play into that belief. I say go with what you like. I like long hair, so I would say grow it long. I've always kept mine shoulder length, but when I got pregnant, it grew like crazy, so I just kept it long. I keep my bangs short, but the rest is 3/4 down my back.

I know but I dont care anymore its my hair and I like it better long for me its easier to take care of. Think about what does age have to do with having your hair short? I guess they want us to look like them old. Don worry about what people say if you want your hair long grow it.

I don't have your problem, nearly as bald as an egg(not quite), so I don't have the choice of long or short. For you I think that what you feel comfortable in is what you should have, I've always prefered long hair for ladies, age shouldn't count, but I do know that there is a belief for some people that once a lady is over 40 then long hair is no longer acceptable, (I think it is just jelousy). Wear it long if it suits you.

I think that shorter hair makes a person look younger. So maybe when you reach 40 (you know the old over ther hill- I of course don't believe that).. you should wear your hair shorter to look younger. I know a couple people with long hair and they do look old- Alot of it has to do with the style of your hair also. You can have long stylish hair-- Not just hair that hangs there.
I used to wear my hair long but I have gone to shoulder legnth- I love how much easier it is to do in the mornings-- and how much younger I look. I'm 34

When my hair was longer I spent less time styling it. Now that it is shorter I spend at least 10-15 minutes styling it.

I recently read an article that said that on some older women, shorter hair can actually age them. I know that if I cut my hair short (I have just turned 40, and have long, layered wavy hair) my hair would go all curly and make me look matronly, so I keep my hair long. And I agree that as long as you style it correctly, and don't wear it parted in the middle and hanging lankly down around your face, long hair can actually make you look younger. I think it all comes down to personal taste really.

I've had very long hair for as long as I can remember. I hope what you say is not true. Because I will be 40 in just over 2 years. I don't think I will be cutting my hair. And I don't think my boyfriend would be too happy if I did. I don't have the face for short hair. I think short hair looks great on some women, and men certainly don't seem to have a problem with women who have short hair, even if they say they prefer long hair, it doesn't stop them from getting with someone who has short hair.

lol ... this is an incrimating question ...lol I am also over 40 and I have worn my hair long for the most part of my life . Right before Christmas I had all mine cut off too ...I just got tired of dipping my pony tail into my paint pot ...I am a painter by trade ... I have seen most older woman do wear their hair shorter ...so I always have thought that as we grow older we will wear our hair shorter ...in many cases I think women that are older with short hair look better as the gray looks a bit drab in longer hair to me ... my hair is blond ...getting darker as I get older ...and I am wondering if I will soon be getting gray hair too ...lol I think if I do then I will wear my hair short because of the gray ...thtas my personal choice... I don't think that there is a set rule that all woman over 40 or so should have short hair ..in my opiion it justd looks better for some...I think I am just going to keep mine a shorter length... so whichever you feel makes you feel the prettiest and happy is how you should wear your hair and don't even consider what others think about it ... :)

I uste to have really long hair and then a couple years ago I got sick of it and cut it all off. Now Im trying to grow it out again to be real long like I usta have it. When I get it to the length I like, then I'm going to keep it that way for a long time. I don't care what age Im at.

I used to have hair that when braided was down below my waist. I got about a foot choped off. Then I had brain surgery, having a 1/3 of your head bald is a great incentive to go short.
Everyone told me I looked 10 yeares younger with shorter hair.
I must admit I am spoiled, I now just comb and go...it took me way longer to do my hair when i twas long.
I think the length of the hair just pulls the whole face down, accentuating the downward trend of the skin and the wrinkles. I am thinking about doing head stands for a few hours a day to fight off gravity and wrinkles...think it will help?

My hair just wasn't made to be long, I guess. LOL It just sort of frizzes out and doesn't do anything no matter what. I LOVE my hair short. I have it about 2 inches all over my head, but cut really shaggy like so I can spike it up and have bangs, too. It's a really cute style. I have a pic on my profile page.
And, no...I do not think that just because you are over 40, you should have short hair.

I am 44 female and have beautiful long blonde hair, thats down to my waist. Its one of my better features. I love my hair. Like when people look at my hair.
At times though, I wish I had short hair.... I go through lots of shampoo and conditioner. My vaccum doesn't like my long hair.
I have grown my hair long many times, and when I finally say enough, I donate my hair to the Locks of Love program.
They help supply to cancer patience. Wigs....

I think you should have the length of hair you want and that suits you, and that age should have nothing to do with it.
I am like you - I had really long hair and then chopped it all off. I've never felt like growing it long again, as I am loving having short hair and have no wish to return. However, if you're envious of someone with long hair? Then it sounds like you are really interested in returning to that, so I'd say go for it. And if you end up not liking it, at least it's something really easy to fix (vs. perms or dye) - just a quick stop at a hair dresser and you're back to short!

I think you should do what ever makes you happy. I have thin brittle hair and if it grows past my sholders it gets frizzy and uncontrollable. I plan to get it cut soon as it is past my sholders and everyone says I should let it grow. I do not listen because they do not have to deal with it everyday like I do.
I think women af ALL ages look fine with hair of any length if it is neat and clean. The length does not matter.

I always had long hair when I was younger as I didn't get to the hairdressers as this was not something my mother ever mentioned . I think she liked the long hair on us . Then the last couple of years ago I started getting my hair cut short . I recieved so many comments on how much better it looked that I go in now once every few months and get it all chopped off . I really hate going to the hairdressers so I prolong it as long as possible but do like it better when it is short .
I don't think age should matter how long a person's hair is . Some people look better in short hair and some people look better in long hair and I feel that if you feel good about the way you look yourself then I wouldn't pay much attention to what society thought was the proper way for me to look . If we all did what socitey though about how we should look , everyone would look the same and there would be no such thing as sence of style .

it is a common belief that after 40 it is better cut one's hair because this would result in an improvement...I've always been told this, too...as myself is concerned I don't think there is a rigid rule....it depends on many factors...it depends on the kind of hair you have (strong hair, thin hair, few hair or numerous..)..it depends on the colour of your hair...and it depends on the characteristics of your face,too...some people don't wear short hair very well...for example people with big or round face...I think the best thing is you decide by yourself or by asking your personal hairdresser for an advice.
anyway hair is a matter of taste and something to play with...therefore if you like it long...don't pay attention to anything and do what you please...you can always go later and cut them...this is the most beautiful thing about hair..they can be changed and changed so many times

Ive tried different kinds of hair styles over the years.
I like my hair long because I love to style. My best friend Mona wants her hair short since she is lazy to brush her hair often.
I guess it boils down to choosing a hair style where you feel comfortable.
