I have been on too many hikes to count and I have only twice encountered what could be considered dangerous animals. One time while hiking in Cupertino, CA at Rancho San Antonio I saw a baby rattlesnake on the side of the trail. I have heard that these are actually more dangerous than their full grown counterparts.Supposedly they do not know how to control the release of their venom. We just walked by on the other side of the trail and it didnt bother us. The other time I encountered an animal was when I was hiking in Palo Alto at Atascadero State Park. There was a bobcat hanging out on the side of the trail. He looked really old and maybe even a little sickly. We were afraid to go past him with just the two of us, so we waited until more people came and walked by in a group. It was a little scary but he left us alone.

I don't know if you'd consider monkeys dangerous, but this mama monkey freaked a group of my friends out.
We were walking downhill from our campsite to get some supplies in town. We came across this mama monkey who was carrying her baby. She started harrassing us; scowling; growling; running up to us as if she was going to attack.
We freaked and tried not to move. We sort of got a bit farther away from her later on, but a friend was left behind. Mama Monkey ran up to my friend and ran her paw over my friend's leg, sort of like scratching. My friend didn't move, so it left later on.
Thank goodness my friend wasn't hurt. But we did tease her about getting rabies and all. Haha..

I don't know about anybody else, but I consider monkeys dangerous. Like that old expression, "God never made a monkey that wouldn't bite." It sounds like they might have been used to getting fed by people, though, and were looking for a handout.

I do frequently run into squirrels AND chipmunks when just walking around the yard, but I don't think of them as terribly dangerous. The most dangerous animal I have seen while hiking is a rattlesnake.
It was in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and just happened to be on a trail called Rattlesnake Den Trail. The guide book scoffed at the name, but you are more likely to see them on certain terrain.
It was on the lower section of the trail where it was unusually wide and level, so I was walking along at a pretty fast clip. I was looking around and if it hadn't been moving, I might not have seen it until I was on it. As it was, I was pretty close. Close enough to see the rattles. It was heading off the trail and I stood in place and took two pictures.
I have seen bears in the Park but not when I was hiking.I am more afraid of wild boars and I'm glad I haven't run into any of them.
Have you seen any dangerous or unusual animals?

While out backpacking we had a wolf visit our campsite at night. It sniffed at us through the tent walls, then luckily ignored us and went to drink from the stream we were camping next to and wandered away.
Another time while hiking we found a rattlesnake, which I didn't see and was about to step on but my friend saw it and yelled at me to not take another step.
