I think that twelve or so years is typical or ''average''....having said that though, there are some diseases which Goldens are prone to getting as they age...some cancers especially. You could try asking the breeder of your dog if there were any history of those diseases in your dog's line. I asked before I purchased and was told that there was not a history of those diseases but still...there is no guarantee.

Our last retriever was just over 10 when we had to have him put to sleep due to bowel cancer. He was turning white but I honestly can't say he was getting any slower,he had been so laid back all his life I don't think anyone would notice.
Our new one is just over 1 year old and a real different dog for all he is the same breed, all have their own personality just as we humans do.

The life span of a golden retriever is usually 8-10 years. I own a golden and he is wonderfull. He is 5 years old. Just remember when he does pass away, he'll be happy to have a owner lik you! :)
