Who owned a computer before 1978? Did you program your own apps?

I'm fascinated by the early history of home computers. The most important program in those days was the basic compiler, because most folks wrote their own applications. Is this true? What did you create? Did you get programs from the many computer magazines and key it the programs?
Also, tell me what systems you had.

I wrote my own or I did key some in from those magazine.
It is amazing how much we forget until somebody remain me how long ago it was and how old I have gotten.
