There are a few reasons for a best response to be given. I always stick to the guidelines and give it to the response which I consider to be the best contributor to the actual discussion, but I must admit I have seen some best responses given and cannot understand why.
If the posting is asking for advice, it is usually the one giving the best advice, or the one that helps you the most. If the posting is a debate, the best response could be given to someone who disagrees, but who puts forward the most logical, intelligent and courteous response that applies to the situation. Some people seem to give it to someone who gives a twist to the discussion with a bit of humour, and some seem to give it for no reason at all.
A best response is given to the person who YOU think has given the best response in reply to your topic. It is your choice.

Well i never used to give responses because i didn't get 'em or see the point when i first joined. Since then i've gotten a few myself so i do it now and i give it to the person i relate to the most.
If someone posts a response and i can relate or agree with i will give it to them and i never give it away insincere. I only give it to those who deserve the response because i liked there addition to my discussion.
I think most of my mylot friends do this too.
