I've recently seen a movie called "The Secret". many of you might have seen it. it was available on google movies for a while. Anyway, in this movie there was one quote that is still in my mine since the first time i've seen it: "we all work with one infinite power". it refers to the fact that we are all made with the same material: energy. and this energy is connected to the universal energy and we can control our destiny. "we are what we think we are". do you agree with this? please also say why you do/do not agree.

By giving this comment I,m curious as to if I indeed am acknowledged, as most people don't answer the responses they recieve?
Anyway, once again red we seem to think along the same line, however I am a firm believer in genetics making up the abilities of peoples achievements. Be it acedemic or sports or artistry... certain people have a natural aptitude to excel in certain areas of developement, proven by tests carried out on young children of the same age, under the same conditions, resulting in remarkably differnt outcomes. It revolves around the old discussion of "nature or nurture"! I do agree that nurture creates individually a higher level, and that nuturing someone that has "natural" ability goes that level higher again!

I don't agree. i believe that a man can excel in any area he desires (unless born with a handicap)as long as he believes in himself. your example is a good one but it's missing one big important factor: human mind. even though we grow in the same environment we still are very different and think very different. that is why other excel and others don't. some people are shy. others are not. some believe in them more than others. that's why i think it's really important too start believing you have the power to achieve everything you want.

Eagle, of course, you are right about genetic limitation and potential. The USSR pretty much proved this beyond doubt when they made a science out of picking the children who could be developed into world class atheletes.
In order to do the best possible in the olympics they did scientific studies to determine if certain children possessing certain inherent characteristics were more likely to do better if given the necessary training. The answer is YES.
My response was more about changing one's personality and behavior.
It would be neat, though, if a skinny weakling like myself could think himself into being big boned and bulked up.
Yes, I could exercise and change my diet. I have tried that. Surprisingly, while I get stronger and just a little larger, I still don't get bigger bones or amass much bulk. This is genetics. I don't have an excess lot of that natural steroid, testostrogen.

Hahaha.. that is why I agreed with you in the first instance red, and as for the size of your bones, well in my book it is the size of your heart that counts mate!!

I think instead of "We are what we think we are" it would be more accurate to say "We become what we think we are".
This difference is because our self perception can never be entirely accurate. That is, our self concepts are inacurate, but we do become what we believe we are. The reality of our self moves toward the self perception.
On the way to becoming the self perception, the self perception is yet again modified, the process begins anew, over and over as we grow and mature.
So, you can see that it is important to think well of oneself. It is a part of the stuggle to become a better person.
