Why have a goal and 'do' something about it?

Everyone says one must have a goal in life and strive to achieve it. What is the necessity, in the first place, to 'have' a goal? Why do people want to 'have' or 'create' a goal and then start finding ways and means to achieve it? Does it not seem like one of the major 'games' that people would like to play? Does it give impetus for people to think that they 'live' a purposeful life?

In my opinion, life is not a game, that's why there is a need to have a direction. That's where the purpose gets in. In order to have a direction in life, there has to be an end-point, a purpose, a goal. I think many people set goals so that they would develop ideals -- something to live for. Otherwise, there won't be anything worth living for in one's lifetime. Goals give us the drive and the will, that upon reaching it, we know that there will be gratification. Well, just my opinion.
