It's Making Me Blush, But I Have To Ask, Who/What are Anime?

Ever since I turned 30, I have worked extremely hard at being the "cool" mom....and I always was. I knew all the lyrics to all of the right songs. I knew all of the newest moves and could dance right along with my daughters, in fact there were times when I actually taught them some of the newest steps (AKA Michael Jackson days).
Ever since I turned 40ish, I have worked extremely hard at being the "cool" grandma....not always the stereotypical one baking the cookies and bread (although I do these things), but "happening" and knowing the difference between "alternative, grundge, glam, rap, hip-hop, etc.".
Now, I am at a total loss! I know what a neo-pet is; but what in the heck are/is Anime? Why are adults so into them? Do young children like them also? Are they appropriate for young children? I have seen one of my dear friends mention the word "cosplay" and am also unfamiliar with that word; but I must admit that I was not a Dungeons and Dragons person either (although if I would have had someone to play with I most certainly would have been and does this have anything at all to do with anything?)
Anyway, now that I've totally shamed myself in front of all of my younger friends and have all of my middle aged friends aghast that I would ask such questions, please can someone help me out ~Donna

Anime are asian-like cartoons. Personally I dont like them, at least most of them. The only one I was really into was Pokemon. But not anymore. By the way... I think is "cool" that you actually care about your grandsons stuff. My grandma is one of "those" grandmas that dont like technology and dont understand modern youth...

Well, Anime is Japanese Animation, but there is also Manga and Amerime or American Animation as well. I am into Manga and Amerime. A lot my favorite comics were done in Amerime for awhile and I loved them in any format. I also love D&D. I am a rogue elf through and through.

It's a type of Japanese artwork used in animation. You have probably seen it and just don't know it. Cartoons like Inyusha, Ghost In The Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, and Showbits are some examples of it. Many of the Anime cartoons though are for adults only. Just so you know. I hope that helps.

oh that's so cute!!. anime is animation. it's basically cartoons for older people, but that's not always the case. asians love the anime and that's where most of them come from. i wasn't aware that old people liked to watch anime, but i know it's definitely starting to get more and more popular with teenagers. don't worry about it, you're hip and up to date now.:):)

don't feel bad about not knowing anime. we can't know everything in this world.
i am 28 and an anime fanatic. i watch them on tv with my younger brothers. i admit, at first, i don't get it, too. but later on, i find the stories interesting. most stories are about achieving something. and yep, stories usually is about fighting for something before achieving their missions in life or getting to their dreams.
anime characters are so cute, too. i have seen dragon ball, dragon ball z, pokemon, naruto, beet, one piece, prince of tennis ( i like this show ), samura X, and many others. the stories are so interesting and so funny at times, too.
anyway, here's a little description from the web about anime to further clarify it to you:
"Anime is an abbreviation of the word "animation". Outside Japan, the term most popularly refers to animation originating in Japan. To the West, not all animation is considered anime; and anime is considered a subset of animation.
While some anime is hand drawn, computer assisted animation techniques have become quite common in recent years. Like any entertainment medium, the story lines represent most major genres of fiction. Anime is broadcast on television, distributed on media such as DVD and VHS, and included in computer and video games. Additionally, some are produced as full length motion pictures. Anime often draws influence from Japanese manga and light novels. Some anime storylines have been adapted into live action films and television series."

you can also read some on the link i've posted. there are also photos of animes stuffs there.
hope i was able to help a little.

Anime' is that japanese cartoon art that looks so realistic. My daughter is into it. You can look it up on Amazon to get an idea of what it is or jsut type Anime into your browser search bar. Or Japanese anime for a search term and you'll get back more hits than you wanted. And Donna don't worry about it you're still cool to me!

Anime is Japanense Animation. Some of it is totally for kids, some of it is absolutely meant for adults only. It depends on what you're talking about. There's an awful lot of it that airs on the Cartoon Network here in the states nowadays, but I've kind of lost interest.
I was hugely into anime a couple of winters ago. Back then there wasn't that much of it on tv here in the USA, so I spent my winter happily hunting up videos online, meaning translated fan videos where you could watch and hear it in Japanese, but there was translated text at the bottom of the screen that fans had provided. I *loved* that. I even learned some small bits of Japanese by watching so much anime. I'm still proud of what I learned.

Hi there. Don't be ashamed of not knowing terms and stuff about cartoons... its part of life. Hey! I also had a neo-pet once. :) An anime is a japanese cartoon. I know this because my husband likes watching them on animax. He teaches kids and tries to learn their lingo. Some are good stuff but others tend to have a violent character or adult-kind of drawing. Just be cool by asking things. Don't worry about admitting that these things are new to you. EVerything is a learning process plus, its better to be a 5 second ignorant for asking than spending forever guessing. :)

I'm an anime freak. Heheh. Currently addicted to Bleach. It's okay to be unfamiliar with these terms, I guess, since it is based on your interests.

Well, previous posts have stated the basics, but let me expound on the appeal that anime has for some people. Just because they are cartoons, does not mean that they revolve on some silly or superficial plot. Some do, but a lot of others send beautiful messages through their stories to the viewers in the same way that movies do, only with a more flexible medium, since you can virtually do anything with ink and colors. Ghost in the Shell explored the possibility of humanity even if almost the entire body was artificial or manmade. Grave of the Fireflies offered us a glimpse of post-WWII Japan. Others, such as the ubiquitous Pokemon, Dragon Ball etc, were geared towards children, yes, but on some level offered the viewer some lesson to be learned etc. As an adult, anime will always hold some fascination with me, and is often a great way to relate with my younger siblings and relatives.

Thank you for asking this Donna and thanks everyone for your excellent responses. I'm a Neopet addict of nearly 6 years and the youngsters are all into Anime. I sensed it was much more though than a cartoon. I still don't really understand how/why the kids get so into it but at least now I have more of an idea. I certainly didn't know it was for adults as well.
As for cosplay, since reading Misskatonics profile I was intrigued and I have to admit I'm still not sure what its about. Do you meet with groups of friends or something or are there annual conventions similar to the Sci-fi ones? I'm feeling a bit ancient lately. *sigh*...lol

Don't feel so bad, Donna! I have coworkers who are in their early twenties who don't know what anime is, so it's not just because you're older that you don't know. It's just something that until fairly recently wasn't popular in our part of the world.
You might have even seen some anime and not known it. There are plenty of "cartoons" that were on American tv even several years ago that are actually "anime'. For example, Sailor Moon is actually an anime. I usually use that example for people that don't know what anime is, because a lot of people watched it and didn't even realize it was anime.
As for whether anime is appropriate for children, it depends on the specific anime. Here in the US, most anime that comes out is marketed to children, but in Japan anime is made for people of different age groups. So while some are specifically for children, there are many more that are more for teens or adults.
I knew about anime long before it was really popular, largely because I hung out with so many nerds. *laughs*

If you know what manga is: anime is the TV/movie version.
If you don't know what manga is:
Anime are animated series or movies, usually with a lot of blood too.
Most anime is made in Asia.
