I've always had trouble coming up with titles for all my writings, whether novel, short story, song or poem. I always give them a working title having something to do with the story or theme. Once I've done the final rewrite, I'll look at the title again. Sometimes I keep it (Green Wool, The Flag House) sometimes I change it (from Discovery to Chrysalis.) My novel, At The Lake, went through many names until I accidentally came across this one.
But you mention that you're concerned that you might not want to change the title. If, when you're done, the working title still fits, then no need to change it. You'll know what's right for it when you've finished writing it.

Thanks so much. It really helps to hear about how others come up with their titles. Alot of the comments I've gotten seem to go along with what you said and so now I just have to come up with a working title.

My piece of advice is to actually finish the novel before coming up with the title. After you write it, you'll be able to pick out the meaningful moments and the important quotes of the novel. Through that, you can select a title that may either pertain to the theme of the novel or a specific quote that somebody said. Or, you can, after writing the novel, relax your mind a bit by leaving your finished writing for a week or two, then come back, review the basic structure of the novel. Close your eyes and think of the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of your novel. That might help with getting a title.

Thanks that's really good advice I appreciate it. I'm just looking forward to actually finishing it, but since I just started that will probably be quite awhile.

hi smartie. it's good for you to start an new novel and seems to be you stuck to find the title of it. well, i'm in a bit confused here.you didn't tell us what kind of novel that you work on.what the theme is.what the story is all about. without having those info i couldn't think what the best title is. i couldn't say anything. as an example i just suggest you a title of "My tears". at the truth we are writing on some kids life hood where she really wish to learn to be a witch. so that is odd. could you tell us clearly, what is all about your novel. so it's easier for us to give some precise title. :)

Well I didn't mean for someone to tell me what title to use, I was just asking for tips on how to pick one. But if it helps the book is a sorta political book about a disaster that completely destroys life as we know it.

I give mine a working title. Something that tells me about what I'm writing. Once its totally finished, it may be easier to think of a proper title. It could be a line out of the book, something referring to the theme or to a character and the changes that they make.

Thanks that's a good idea. Anything would probably be better than untitled and especially if I decide to start anything else before I finish it, it would be a good idea to have some kind of title to distinguish it for any others. I guess I was just thinking that once I give it a title it would stick and I wouldn't want to change it.

It's kind of hard for me to answer your question without any idea at all of what kind of book you are working on. It it an adventure novel? Romance? Mystery? Let me know something about your book and i will try to give you a good answer as to a title. Lots of lick with your book. I am thinking about writing a autobiography.

See I'm having trouble trying to pinpoint what type to call it also. But as I said above its a sort of political disaster novel. I guess it could fit in the adventure genre as well.
