Waking hours of Infant

I do remember from my eldest son when he was still a month old. All he does is sleep and wakes up only when he is hungry. If he wakes up, it's only for an hour or two and he is back to sleep again and he sleeps straight thru the night. Only wakes to feed and then he goes back to sleep. But with my month old daughter now, she sleeps all thru the day and then wakes-up at 11 or 12 midnight and the goes back t sleep around 4 or 5 in the morning already! I feel her waking hours is too long and i am worried she is not getting enough sleep for a month old baby. And also it is so tiring on my part since i usually sleep around 10 in the evening and the have to wake up at 11 to take care of her until 5 in the morning. It leaves me so exhausted! How can i possibly change her waking hours? Can i do that or i just have to live with it?

Well every baby is different. Some need more sleep and some are ok with less. Since she does sleep for most of the day I don't think you need to worry about her not getting enough sleep. My daughter is 4 months old now and she slept during the day and was up at night when she was first born too. What I did to get her to sleep at night was I started a bedtime routine. Every night around the same time I give her a bath, get in her in her pj's, give her a bottle and rock her til she falls asleep. After about a week of that she started falling asleep at the same time every night. Then when she wakes at night keep the lights off or really low. Make sure there's no noise...no tv or music or anything. Try not to talk to her too much, keep it low if you do and don't make too much eye contact. This will help her to fall asleep. During the day keep it bright and talk to her and play with her when she is awake. This should help her to eventually differentiate between night and day. It may take a little time but she'll get there!
