My mother used to make granny square afghans with her remnants. I personnally hate making granny squares...what do you do with your remnants? Put the to use or just toss?

I make crazy hats for kids out of my remnants. I found a pattern somewhere on the web, but can´t remember where now. Basically, you do up four simple squares using a large hook and sew them together to form a rectangular pocket. Use the same colors or others to make tassles for the two tips of the hat. Kids love them, they´re soft and cute and make great gifts!

i still can't bear to throw away my leftovers yet, have some really old little balls of yarn, lol. but i make the granny squares or just an afgan changing colors when the ball runs out. i do a lot of plastic canvas projects, too, so it gets used there also. hugs...

I make small things like funny nosewarmers (the pattern is at knitty.com), and cat toys. I don't really like having a lot of small pieces of yarn lying around, so I couldn't do anything big with them. Also, all of my yarn is different - different weights and materials, so it wouldn't work well in one big project.

I usually give my remnants to my girls and they have created some very strange and interesting things. I'm all for the creative mind even if I don't get it! LOL

As long as they're not stringing up the family pet; LOL.

It depends, of course, on how much is left over. If it is a tiny bit, I tuck it away for holiday decoration projectss, gift wraping, and such. Longer bits get made into granny squares. I read somewhere that there is an Indian reservation that will accept the squares and put them together for afghans they use or sell. I'll see if I can find that address and will send mine there. Otherwise I may just save them up until I can talk someone into putting them together for our church project, making afghans for children in trauma. [Project Linus] I figure SOMEONE will eventually agree to do it. :-)

I have a scrap blanket. It is a blanket that is always "in the works" that I add to when i have something left over from a project that isn't enough for something else. It has tons of different colors and textures and I love it! Its pretty ugly to be honest, but I don't care...its mine!

I have quite a few odds and ends right now, so soon I'l make them up into an afghan. I knit every row a different color and leave the tied ends to trim as fringe. It makes some interesting afghans.

I make scrap yarn afghans, multicolored hats, gloves and scarfs. The shorter ones I cut in latch hook length and I am making a rug of all different colors and textures

I would have never thought to cut it to latch hook length, probably because I don't do latch work. You're a master at getting your moneys worth!

Amigurumi elephant - Purple crocheted elephant.
Use your favorite search engine and look for amigurumi. These small toys, animals, and 'things' take small bits of yarn and are fun to make with single crochet. I just made an elephant for a Michael's display. I've also made teddy bears and tiny purses out of bits of yarn. Add beaded fringe to the purses. So much fun, so little time. You can make finger puppets too.

These are some great ideas! I think I will start making hats and scarves for the homeless with all of my remnents. I'm also going to try to make a crazy wacky hat. I never thought of that. LOL

Right on time, Annies attic free pattern of the day is a headband and pin created with scrap yarn. You have to view the pattern today if you wish to save it, because it will no longer be there come tomorrow. (26 Feb. 07)

oh yes, another idea if you have a fair bit of length left, is to make trims for your clothing. Edgeing for your shirt sleeves, bottom and collars, trim your skirt - your pillow cases...make a little 1 color motif and decorate your fabric tote bag or denim clothing with patches made from these motifs of different shapes and patterns. Make a belt using scrap yarn!

depending on how much scrap there is: my daughter will take a good portion of scraps and make her dolly dresses from them (fashion sized dolls take very little yarn to clothe) the 4 year old likes to use the little cut off pieces for gluing onto paper, creating yarn mosaics and pictures.

I haven't done it yet, but I've always intended to make a granny square quilt for my daughter out of my yarn remnants too. (I have so many at this point that I'm not sure where I'd start!) I just thought it would be fun to look at with her later on and remember the projects that were made out of the yarn in each square. I know I have remnants of the royal blue yarn from a dress I made for her, light blue from a blanket for her godbrother, yellow from a blanket for her cousin, red chenille and white fun fur from her Santa scarf, etc. I guess what's made me put it off this long isn't so much the thought of knitting all those granny squares (they seem like quick in-front-of-the-TV projects), but the thought of putting them all together. EEK!!

That's exactly what I hate! I don't mind making the motifs, but when it comes to sewing them all together I shudder! I usually steer clear of those patterns now or 'sew as I go'.

Much of my scrap yarn just sits until I find a use for it. For a while, I was making patchwork blankets. We have three of them in my house now. All left-over yarn except for white and black. I do make squares, but they are not granny squares. These are done entirely in single crochet. All the squares are bordered by one round in black. This creates a common color to bind the squares together. I use Red Heart's Black, no dye lot for this. If not enough yarn is left for a square, I finish what I have, then finish the square with white, then the black. Another thing I did was to make multi-colored squares and circles for my babies. They were fascinated by the texture and color.

I usually save my remnants, and then see if I can't work them into hats later on. I made a bunch of dreadlock hats with larger scraps of cotton yarn that I had lying around, and they turned out pretty well. I keep saying that I'm going to make the most hideous granny square afghan with some of my scraps, but the part I hate most about granny square afghans is joining them all together at the end.

I tie them all together, and make a stripey scarf. Because of the knots (I'm lazy) there are neat little tassles on one side, and it's nice and plain on the other.

I make whatever I can with my scraps. Whether it be a small blanket, pot holders, toys....I never throw mine away.

I save it all and then in the spring I put it out in the garden and the birds pick it up and make nests out of it. Its so nice to see old things not going to waste! I dont think I could ever have enough to make anything out of as I use as much as I can of the ball!! I hate being wasteful lol.
