why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

the kamikaze pilots for those who don't know are those who died commiting honorable suicide during the 2nd world war. Honorable because for the Japanese, it was much better to die than actually surrender in war. If they were supposed to die, why do u think they even bothered wearing helmets? Was it because they never expected to die in the first place?
