Formatting may cause damage on your hard drive?

How often you format your hard drive? Some other say that formatting may cause damage to your drive. But i often do that on my hard drive. And so far my drive works normally. Once my computer runs slowly because of too much data and applications installed. I used to format and install a fresh operating system instead of de-fragmenting my hard drive. Although it took a long time for installing a fresh OS and software applications, but for me it runs faster if newly installed all applications. which you prefer? defragments or reformat?

There are two ways to format our hard drives. High-level formatting and low-formatting. High level formatting does not cause damage to our hard drives even if we do it a thousand times because it only re-writes the file system structure of the disk making it like new while low-level formatting might cause bad sectors to our hard drives because it re-aligns the position of the tracks and sectors while writing the control structure of the tracks and sectors are.

I dont think formatting will destroy your hard drive. i prefer formating, although reformating then installing fresh os would mean needing all the drivers and installing all of your programs and also taking note that you have to backup all of your important files is really frustrating but for the sake of performance, id rather do reformating than defragment.

I don't think it damages it at all. I've never heard that. If anything it's good for it because it cleans it up. After you've been using a drive for a long period of time all the data and deleting and creating files it starts to get fragmented and files get cross linked. You can use Check Disk and Disk Defragmenter to fix some of these problems, but a lot of times they don't cut it. A fresh format ensures the drive is operating optimally. I usually reformat every 6 months - 1 year or so, and it's done nothing, but help my computers run better.

I think there is no problem you formating your harddrive, as long as you not over doing this, example once a week or may be more once a day, the problem is, do you have time to format a harddrive so often or not ?, since the bigger your harddisk the more time it takes to just formating, or may be you could use quick format, just like an abracadabra, it all done, since it's only copy the part of the initial data of your harddisk CMIIW.

I've done once a months, sometimes twice. depends on how my computer runs and how much applications i have been installed. I partitioned my hard drive into two, the first partition from where the windows installed that's what i formated and install a fresh windows. The other part i set as a back up for my important files.

who said that formatting damages the hard disk??it just deletes the information on the hard drive nothing else may be by deleting the information on hard disk some programs might malfunction because it might require the information that was formatted.but i wud still prefer defragment over format because i hold lot of information on hard drive which i cannot afford to lose.

I've never heard that reformatting a hard drive causes damage. It's simply writing to the drive. Windows can get flakey after a year or two, and so many little program get loaded that it's probably a good idea to start again. Defragmenting a hard drive is something you need to do in any event, probably monthly.

I have reformatted the hard drive many times and it has never presented the slightest problem. This is the perfect way to clean up the drive, because a fresh installation will eradicate any errors that previously existed. Defragemting will speed up the access by grouping the data properly, but will not remove surplus data left behind from previous programs or correct corrupted files.

Even I format my computer quite a lot on an average basis of one format every one or one and half month. But let me tell you till now I have not faced a lot of problems due to that my hard disk does not have any bad sectors due to lot of formatting and also I think if we can format of computer and now and then it boosts the performance of our computer. As we keep on using the computer a lot of temporarily and unwanted files keep on accumulating in our computer which causes the computer to slow down so if we can reformat it and install the operating system than we can boost the performance of our computer but yes I would prefer a quick format instead of a normal format because it is much safer than the normal format and this may be one of the reasons that I am not facing any problem relating to format

I only format when it is being effected by a virus. Some times operating system also crushes. After formatting it works better! But it is always harassing.

As I have had bad experience with formatting, then maybe I will choose defragments. What happened before is that I format my computer (well .. not me.. I dont understand hahaha) anyways after formatting, there are many things that wouldnt work such as the network drive, sound drive, movies, etc2 (am I making any sense?) I dont know what happen, but basically, my computer cant be used for anything other than words hiks hiks :( and even after I bring it to the computer shop, or to friends that understand that sort of things, the condition stayed. So I needed to buy a new one :( Therefore nowadays I am very sensitive about reformatting, afraid that something bad would happen again hahahah

thanks for responding. I think you should have to learn formatting and installing new windows on your computer. remember that after you installed a fresh windows you also have to install device driver of your motherboard, video card , sounds and network card even printer. All these device had a their own software to be installed to work properly.

If your computer has only one hard drive then perhaps adding a second drive may help. if you keep your C drive dedicated for your OS and applications and your secondary maybe E: drive for saving files then you will reduce the number of simultaneous file access operations your main drive performs. It should improve performance.

I prefer defragment first. Reformat will make all your data and application you installed lost. I choose to do all the things I can do to make my computer performance still good, such as, cleaning junk file, temp file and so on. Reformat not damage your HD, it's the same thing with delteing your file at computer.

Deleting cannot totally cleaned your hard drive. If some of your files infects of virus and cannot fix by a anti-virus software. I think formatting is a better way to clean up your drive.

Formatting your hard drive very often will definitely shorten the life of your hard drive, same apply to defragmentations. This actions actually causes the system to wipe out the data and rewrite it again repeatedly onto the same space that your previous data are store. As we all know, repeatedly writing and erasing a content on the same spot of a piece of paper will definitely cause the paper to breakdown ultimately. The same concept apply to hard drive. In addition, it'll also cause the rewriting tool to be blunt, equivalent to a pencil or pen concepts and cause your hard drive to fail earlier.

I myself don't know how to do this bit my son has his HND in computing and is doing a Ba and a BSc in it too . He does the same as you , every so often if the computer isn't doing just what he wants it too then he re formats the hard-drive , He has the same PC he built with his friend for 5 years now , So I wouldn't think it is damaging the hard drive xx

I don't think so that Formatting will damage the hard drive i think harddrive get damaged when there is some malfunctioning ocures due to rugh handeling of pc or by moving hdd here n there! If u keep u r hdd in pc only then i think there could be no problem.

i recently got my computer reformatted and now is working perfectly... its so much faster than before and im so happy with it. i always scan my computer for viruses and defragment my computer at least once a week to keep it in top condition. i believe that u should just defragment ur computer often but if its got too many problems that keep reoccuring even after u've done ur best to fix them, u shud reformat it. so i guess both are good but u just need to know wen to do each. i hope i answered ur qquestion ! if so, pls rate + ! =) thanks and take care !
