I keep hoping that some little computer company is going to come up with some kind of totally new Operating System that just blows Windows away. There has got to be someone somewhere who is working on a new, non-Windows based operationg system program out there somewhere. Are they all scared to challenge the Microsoft Monopoly?

Well there is linux. The interface is much better than that of Windows, it is more secure, fast, stable and guess what free. Kubuntu distribution is a good way to start for beginners. You can have both systems installed on your computer windows and Linux. Mac OS is also great, but it is not free.

linux is always used for programming purposes never used as a standard operating system and as far mac os is considered it wont even support as many software as new windows vista supports.linux no doubt is a freeware but still it isn't as efficient as win and it is quiet vulnerable as well

I use Linux on my laptop, and I am currently running the latest version of Xandros. Xandros was designed to be used as a home operating system, and even has the ability to support a few Windows programs such as Microsoft Office.

Linux is evolving quickly that is true but I don't think that it is feasable for me at this time as I do not have the time to learn new software while I am in the midst of getting my degree online.

That is a good question really. The answer to that is Microsoft is popular becuause it is user-friendly and more widely accpeted. The other reason maybe that it is cheaper compare to the other operating systems.

Mac OSX is the best , it 100 times better than Windows, I love it. I heard the new one coming out soon, wonder how tat one is going to be probably similar with few extra features, but I say it is well known that Microsoft opponent is Apple. U know how apple came up with iphone now there is rumour going around on some blogs that microsoft is going to come up with Zune phone. Those copy cats, they always copy Apple.

I suppose the microsoft assasins would come for them if they tried^^ But seriously I agree with you totally and there probly is alot of better OS's but no one bothers to try them so they never get a chance to develop.

i once asked a vice president of an it company - 'why we are not creating our own OS?' he said - 'why should we? if microsoft owns 80% of the market share, we will be competing with Mac OS, Linux and other OSes out there for the rest 20%. Time and money wise, it is not worth it.' end of discussion.

I keep hearing the term "Microsoft Monopoly", but there is no such thing. many operating systems exist, so you cannot blame Microsoft for producing the most popular one. If you wish to use a different system, then check out the many distributions of Linux, the majority of which are totally free.

it is true that microsoft have completely taken over the market in manufacturing operating system, and they deserve to be on top there is no other company which can give better services and no one get up against it because it takes a lot for a small business operating system to take over the world. eventhough mac has come up as a strong contender but it still has a long way because none of the software are compatible with it,the only way windows can fall is that it should have a major defect in operating system which renders user privacy and the upcoming operating system should defend it.that would never happen i guess. once a sun has risen it should set as well, just hope for the best.

Yeah I know, today Microsoft has the biggest market share for Computer Operating System. And Microsoft still sell their product with high price. It's good in business theory but for us the end user it's so hard to keep an update. Linux try to give us a different way in OS choise, I'm so appreciate that. Absolutely need a hard work and long time to challenge the Microsoft Monopoly.

I don't mind Microsoft, as long as they keep evolving their products, and Vista sucks.
