Networks playing around with program schedules. Like or dislike?

It's impossible to watch a series straight through any more. Lost was split into two mini-seasons. Programs are taken off while new shows are introduced and then put back on again, often with a change in time and day. House went off for several weeks, then started again--I thought. But they broadcast one episode and then took a break again. Why do you think the networks are doing this? Does it affect whether you're going to keep watching a show?
It makes me just not want to bother with them. I can rent a series from Netflix and see the episodes straight through.
