i have an ibm home pc aptiva model number 2168-242. it came preinstalled with windows 98 and a few years ago i updated to windows 2000. more recently it crashed and the following message appeared "windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt WINNT\SYSTEM\CONFIGSYSTEMced is missing or corrupt". i now want to install ubuntu and delete windows completely saving none of its files. i downloaded ubuntu 6.10 and copied an bootable image(or so i thought i did) using imgburn. when i load it into my dell pc it says that it can be booted without harming windows but when i load it into my ibm it doesn't even recognise it and the same screen appears " windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt SYST..." does anyone know how what i am doing wrong or do i need to boot windows before i start. does anyone know a suitable free software to burn bootable images or a software that will delete the window partitions on my CRASHED ibm and give the chance to install ubuntu.

Have you tried to set in the Bios that the CD Drive will boot before the HDD? Then it should run the CD. If that doesn't help I could try to find a Bootmanager that can be installed afterwards. Maybe you have Partition Magic that has an installable bootmanager.

I would use both, if one doesn't work you will still have the other one. And i don't know if it surely will work because I've never needed that thing, my pc's already had a boot manager.
