Well the most interesting thing I find in lord of the rings are the war scenes but some of my friends say it's sort of gruesome, especially the scene of orcs killing humans. what do think of this? I find it acceptable because it's still part of a war and there's no war without both sides taking casualties, right?

Agree agree. The scenes in LOTR are still acceptable, they're not beyond my limits. In fact, those are the kind of scenes that could accurately portray the carnage and horror of battle. Without those scenes, the audience wouldn't be able to feel the intensity and it would not dawn on them that in the story, the war is the last deciding factor in determining Middle Earth's fate forever.
The scenes are not too gruesome for me. They're, on the other hand, simply awesome.

I like the war scenes as well as they have great camera angles and are so well scripted and directed. The Battle of Helms Deep is one of the best battle scenes in cinema history. It is not really that gruesome as you might see body parts being chopped of, but you know orcs are fake, and there isn too many parts where human are seen decapitated or being killed greusomely. Not much more gruesome then Saving Private Ryan or any other good war movie.
