Well no, I don't think Don Henley "was" the Eagles, but his voice certainly is what helped make the Eagles famous.
I think Joe Walsh added a lot to the band, also.
I do like his solo work, very much. I think that his work just keeps getting better.
I have not heard a song by Don Henley that I didn't like.
In fact he is one of my favorite artist. The Eagles were one of my favorite bands, I still like to listen to them sometimes. They are a classic.

I think that Don Henley was a great majority of the Eagles' success! And, he had a GREAT solo career! :)

Well certainly Don Henley is good, that can't be argued, but the Eagles had several good singers that were just as good or better, Timothy B. Schmidt,Glenn Frey, and there were others also. Don Henley added to the Eagles sound, but he wasn't my favorite singer! And I didn't like, how they pushed the lead guitar player aside, named Don, also, he was a real good guitar player, and he added what you call the Eagles sound, between him and Joe Walsh!! And Joe Walsh has the best unique personality I have seen, and he sings some good songs that are really, sensitive!! No, I don't think Don Henley did as good on his own, without the Eagles, I think his ego got in the way!!

Don Henley was a major factor for the Eagles being who they are but I would have to say that the others were just as talented as he is. I do not consider his solo career as even being remotely close to the level of quality that they had as the Eagles. Don Henley on his own never even came close to the height of achievement that the Eagles gained as a group, imho.
