India - Where 'Life Is Beautiful' !

I apologise that this is going to be a long post from me. I also apologise, that this might not look like a 'topic of discussion' as such, and most of you might not find anything useful in it. It is just that today is a holiday, and I am free, and I am feeling like writing. So, I am going to write! As simple as that!
Location - I dont know how to say it in longitude and latitude. I dont plan to make things too technical either. I hope that someone, who never struggled with geogaphy tests wont find it difficult to locate India in the world map. However, I can help you a bit. India comes in asian continent. She shares her boundaries with China, and is soon so share its population figures with that country too!
Climate - This is amazing. There are Himalayas in the north, where temperature goes as low as -50 degrees, and at the other extreme in the south, there are places where the temperature burns at +50! Go east, and you have Cherrapunji, which boasts of having maximum rainfall in the world, and to the west, has the deserts of Kutch, which often struggles for a few drops of water. The central India, has one of the most beautiful greenary in form of Satpura Range. 'Cotradiction', thy name is India!
People - So, you think its only the climate, which is different? Ok, have a look at people now! If it is to do with colour, then the country can very well give rainbow VIBGOYYOR a run for its money! From snow white, to carbon black, and wheatish too, the country has almost all shades of colours! The nature of the people, is generally friendly, and if you are a foreginer, preferably European or American, then, the common man, is going to be extra friednly with you, and try to help you at times, even when you want none! Though, its hard to generalise a particular mentality of people in a country, whose well past a billion mark, but still, one can say, that people here are more emotional, and family oriented, and this feature is very well reflected in the soceity as well.
Culture - At times it looks, as if 100s of small countries have been united as one and given a name 'India'. The country has many 28 states, and almost each state has got its own culture. The most popular language is Hindi, which is majorly followed in India. Apart from it, Englsih is also popular, and then, each region has got its own regional language, and even more accent. People from all religons live here, and so, the culture is also diverse. Be it Diwali, Ed, or Christmas, all festivals are celebrated together by the coutryman.
Economy - India is a land of farmers. Well, that is what I hear often. However, the condition of farmers are not somthing, one can be proud of. I have seen some very tough lifestyle of the farmers, and it really amazes me to see, that despite all the hard time, they still continue to carry on with the good work. West, mostly Americans, Canadians, and Brits have already seen a portion of Indians, (NRIs- non Resident Indians) making an impact over their country. However, there is still lot of thing, still to be done, particularly at the grassroot level of the economy.
Political - Now, some not so good thing about her! The bureaucracy has been a big disappointment, and the corruption has entered deep into it. Even well after 50 plus years of her independence, the country has not shown performance as per her potential, and the credit undisputedly goes to the dirty politics around. Cunning politicians have been able to fool innocent and majorly uneducated rural Indians. However, with literacy rate increasing promisingly, alongwith the level os awareness of a common man, lets hope that the future is going to be promising.
Conclusion - So this is a little outer introduction of my country. All said and done, once land is once own, and he ought to have a soft corner for it, and I am no exception to this rule. The aim of this post was to have some kind of cultural exchange between all of us. MyLot has got members from almost every corner of the world. So, I thought, it would be a good India, if we can have some kind of culture excahnge here. After all, we here are ONE BIG FAMILY in our own way!
So, let me have opinions of other fellow family members. It would be good, if we can share some peculiar things in this thread. Be it something related to once country, city, or people, or anything cultural for that matter. Feel free to express yourself.
Cheers!

Good GOD. You really could write about your country. So much of a writer you are. Good on you.
I've been to India before. I've been to Trivandrum (was it Kerala?), I've been to Mumbai, and I've been to Madras.
I love Madras. When I get money of my own, I wouldn't mind coming back to Madras and Trivandrum. Mumbai is okay, but it's a big city for me, too crowded.
I love manggoes from India, Sarie from India, and I love the food in Madras.
As for me, I'm from Indonesia.
In terms of people, we are more or less the same like Indian, very friendly. The political, also.. not so good (I have to admit). The climate, in Indonesia constantly hot. We Indonesian also enjoys the movie from Bollywood, it's quite big in Indonesia. Most of the people in the movie industry in Indonesia are Indian born in Indonesia (but I guess they are already became Indonesian citizens since long time ago).

That's interesting to know about India, which was a very underdeveloped country long ago.But now you can find drastic changes among the middle class people who are trying to reach the upper class through their hardship. As you said the weaker community people has to rise from that level and only then, India will be considered as a developed country.

Well I live in Australia, we are a proud race, we do try to stick together, and agree on most things here. We are known to the world due to the Kanagroo but a lot of people that come here think that they are going to see Kangaroo's jumping down the street, no way. You can see Kangaroo's wild ones when you travel along country road, and of course in our beautiful zoos. We love our sports, and we play all different kind of sports here. We actually have 7 states, we have big celebrations at Christmas times, and of course the New Year which more people get together to welcome in the new year ahead of them. In regards to Politic we have mainly two parties labour and liberal parties. The labour party is more giving to the poor and liberals more for the rich so this year when we vote more people should be voting for the labour party. We have many different races here and the first race here was the Aboriginal who came here 40,000 years ago.

I skim read this because I totally agree with you, India is a beautiful country, poor in monetary value but rich in colour and nature and well beauty.
Every time I watch "Jewel in the Crown" I want to run to India and see it all for myself. I want to taste and enjoy your culture.
I do not however agree with what we British did to India, we had no rights to move in and take over your country and treat your people as our servants and lesser people just because Britain thought it was the ruler of them all. I am glad the Empire no longer exists and I am pleased that we no longer hold India in our Crown.
However, though I would never say we civilised you because that is a horrible word, you where doing very well on your own, despite the poverty, which we just added to.
I think some of the buildings that where built for the British by Indians who payed a pittance are beautiful and they are a credit to Indian craftman ship and the share elegance of your culture.
I think Indian culture influenced British Architecture, for in Liverpool we have the beautiful India Buildings and they are masterpiece of beauty.
I think we also offered you education, albeit according to the Jewel and the Crown, they taught you about God but belied your beliefs to indoctrinate your country in a religion that was Alien to you.
So although we did a lot of damage to your country, and it saddens me to think that we did this by trying to Westernise your Country instead of trying to help your Country to be better, instead of pillaging your gold and taking your fruit and tea, and claiming India as ours. Which I think is disgusting and intolerable and terribly sad that one Culture should think it better than another one.
Despite all this by offering you education some of you where able to break out of this poverty and become Lawyers, Doctors, Learned People Teachers, and take back your country and make it what it is today.
Despite the abject poverty that many of your people live in, you always seem to a be colourful culture. Even your spices are rich reds, golds, and your perfumes are delicious. There there is your clothes ecstatic. Your own culture your own religion and your beliefs are all so beautiful
I hope this does not cause offence. Can you tell us more about your country please. I love Jewel in The Crown, I love reading about India but its wonderful to hear it first hand from someone who lives there.
Blessed Be

first of all that was a really long discussion.
but i don't agree with u totally...
whatever u say INDIA is still full of corruption...
a country with 100 crore people just can't go right and particularly when there is poverty, illiteracy,so many religions...
peace can't be there for long neither can development...

corruption, poverty, illeracy is also in many other countries, what we are discussing here is real people, though they are poor , they are full of self respect, though they are illetrate, they know how to respect parents and teachers, which in other litrate countries you don't find, our country has least percent of divorces, which mean our relationships are stronger. If we have few negative points, we have lots of positive point for which you should be proud of your country. If at the age of 19, you have such wrong attitude for your country, then who is going to stop corruption in future. Change your attitude. We all are indians and we must always praise our country.

Who say s that life is beautiful here in India? If someone living in India says most boastingly says that it is the best place of the world to live in India, then it can be safely said that he is labouring under delusion. From the outer side everything looks so cool and vibrant, but in reality that is not so.
India is a Pandora's box. If you open the tight-lidded can all the ugly flies will be swarming around you. Socalled patriotic Indians just feel puffed up when saying about the dream projects of developments as though nowhere in the world countries are being developed at that frantic pace. But who are lapping up the milk and honey of the development projects?
Millions of people still are dying of hunger. Poverty at the grassroot level have reached the rock bottom. So many people are still living below poverty line. Can you imagine that the basis of living below poverty line is something around Rs.300 per head. Can anybody afford to maintain with this paltry sum?
There is provision for education for all just to learn 3 R's. And that is being persisisted after open kitchen in every village school. Can anybody get proper education in these kitchen schools? While the children belonging to privileged class of the society are getting high-tech education in high-paying schools, the poorer section of the population are just learning the 3 R's in their muddy kitchen schools.
Agriculture has become highly mechanised and cost-intensive resulting in a drastic fall of working days of the landless farmers. These landless farmers are the real farmers in agriculture. Their rights are being denied and squeezed. Who cares for them? Land reformation is a far cry through out the length and breadth of the country. At the same time the marginal farmers are fighting back to the world and are gradually being reduced to penury.
The fate of the labourers in the unorganised sectors are less said the better. They do not receive the minimum wages as stipulated by the government. The working hours is always staggering. Some times they are laid off on whimsical ground. They do not have any trade union of their own. So the proprietors can do anything what they deem fit for protecting their interests.
The infra-structural facilty is per below the international satandard. The electricity, telephones, water supply, health service and everything are not sufficient for the common people. There is no basic amenity for the common people as to living a decent life. The so-called nationalist rulers have already sold the cultural ethos of this country to the western world. The security of life and property is never guranteed. Political vandalism and rampant corruption in all walks of life and society are enjoying the field day. There is not much democracy in this democratic setup. Human rights are trampled at will.
Even then can India be called a paradise of development?

WOW what a wonderful post. I have never known anything about India in any particular sense, but not that you have introduced me to it, I am curious. It sounds beautiful with all the different climates right there together. I love how you said Christmas, Ed, and Diwali are all celebrated together. That is wonderful that people can still celebrate together, but believe in different things. Thank you for the intro to your country. Sounds wonderful.

You did a great job of describing India! My in-laws are from Mumbai and are missing home terribly. It is a goal of mine to visit as it is my husband's and my children's heritage and culture (I am caucasian). They all tell me it is a very beautiful country full of great stories and culture. My children are still very young and would not appreciate it just yet,but someday we will all go! Thanks again.

I love my country and especially my state Goa. I would never want to migrate to any other country cause goa is the best. It is the only state in India which has both the influence of the east and west. So our state is much freer when it comes to customs and traditions. So we get the best of both worlds.

I know what made you write all this. It is your love for your country. If I will sit to write about India, I think there will be no end. We all Indians are emotional about our country. We all are not soilders, but inside every Indian there is a soldier who wants to do something for his country. Actually our India is such, that you just can't stop loving it , can't stop telling people about it. Wish all could see India from your and my eyes.

Hello there! Hey, thanks for sharing a little bit about India, that was very neat, and I am sure I will have more questions in the future! I had a friend visit India, he said it was a life changing experience. He said that he was mainly concerned with the Orphanages over there, because his heart really went out to it, but India in general is a beautiful place. I actually live in one of the western states in America, Not too far from a ski resort and plenty of huge mountains near the Wasatch front. there are I believe 1.5 million people living here in Utah alone, and we have The Great Salt Lake here, which I believe is ten times more concentrated than the oceans. It's pretty shallow, so it isn't much of a sight, just strange. let's see. ok, there are 48 states within America, and then Hawaii in the middle of the pacific, and Alaska which is just west of Canada. so 50 states total. I believe that there are 300 million US citizens in America. (could be more now)
again, thanks for the info!
