The Lord of the Rings - love it or hate it?

I read the book nearly 40 years ago and my hatred of it and the other books in Tolkien's "trilogy of boredom" as I call it still is fresh in my mind.
I hated the characters, the situations, the setting, the friggin' Hobbits, all of it. I was talked into going to see the film version "Lord of the Rings" against my better judgment and lasted 2 hours before I walked out.
Do you think it's brilliant and engaging? Or boring and a waste of paper? Tell me how you feel about "The Lord of the Rings."

People told me the books were good, but I read a few pages and thought it was rubbish. Then the movies were announced and I thought maybe the fantasy material would be better suited to the big screen. Then I watched the movies and cringed. Dull, one-dimensional characters, simplistic plot and outlook on the world, annoying performances, nothing but fancy, hollow CGI. I never watched the last movie. I don't really care if Frodo destroys the ring or not.
Now, let's do Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code! ;)

I am one that thinks it is still a wonderful piece of ingenious work.. Tolken created a New World with new races and new languages. The details, the emotions and the story was just excellent to me. He was a very gifted writer and I have found many of his works to be a pleasure to read. Infact I am now trying to get my hands on , Tom Bombadil, a book based on my favorite character from that series.

I'd have to say I hate it. I am just not into that kind of movie. I know it was well done and everyone loved it but for me I'm into basic romantic comedy types of movies. You know the ones with not much substance. LOL

I don't think MyLot has enough bandwidth for that. :)

I have read the book about 35 years ago, and I absolutely loved it. I loved the world of fantasy it depicted and got my imagination to work overtime. I re-read it a couple of times since, and enjoyed it just as much if not more, as I discovered some details that had evaded me when I was younger. The film is also pretty much to my liking, although I tend to prefer books and use my fantasy.
It's a matter of taste, I suppose. But I agree with you about Star Wars. I didn't like the films at all, especially the most recent ones.
Harry Potter and The DaVinci Code are hardly worth mentioning in this discussion either, as their contribution to literature is almost as inexistent as the Bible or Mein Kampf. ;)

Lords of the ring is one great epic tale ever told. Is not only me to have said this thing, there are so many others like me who think the same. First of all the imagination is full of quality, the characters , the scenes, the bond they share everythink is just striking. And above all the way story flows i mean it would not have been easy for the writer to make it. In the entire story there came no moment where i felt dissapointed. Its a novel worth to read.

I'm with you on this one Xphile777. I just can't see it, but that's ok, there are those who probably can't believe I don't like Lord of the Rings. Oh well.

I agree with you, they are absolutely awful. I remember I had to read the Hobbit for school and do a report on it, it was just torture. Ugh.

There is a satire called Bored of the Rings you might like. Sorry, I don't know the author. I like the books very much. I read them in my twenties when there was some kind of a national regulation that you had to read them. I remember before that, when a person would hear that I hadn't read the trilogy, they would clutch their chest and fall back in horror.
I think the main problem with them is the huge number of characters and the fact that each one of them is called by six different names. You need to have a cheat sheet with names and places ready while you read.
The films I didn't care for. In the books, the character's fellowship was the most important aspect. The films were pretty much swordfights and running around. And you still needed that cheat sheet because if you didn't already know who a character is and why he was there, they didn't tell you.
I only watched the first film; it was a letdown. I had looked forward to seeing the home of the tree elves, who build homes in the tree canopies. What a great opportunity for computer imaging. The movie barely peeked at it.
