Why, on a typical shirt, are the bottom and top buttonhole slits horizontal, when the rest of the buttonhole slits are vertical?

I am pretty sure that the buttons are done this way so that they top buttons, which get a lot of pressure from our necks, stay closed. It's harder to get them buttoned or unbuttoned, so if they're horizontal, it'll take more stress from our necks to get them opened. Does that make sense?
