Are you spontaneous, or a planner?

I have often been told that I am too set in my ways, and not very spontanuous. Recently I sat and thought on that, and realized that it's pretty true-- even when I claim to be doing something "spontaneously," it is usually a kind of "planned spontaneity" that's going on.
Spontanous people go "ick" and tell me they find planning to be as dull as dishwater. Personally, I actually *enjoy* making a plan, and then seeing if everything turns out along the lines i had planned. Of course, it doesn't always, and maybe the way I respond in those situations are more spontaneous.
But I was wondering if the two can really be separated? I find that it's often the case that spontanous acts (by others, more than me) come about as an offshoot from plans. Similarly, plans are sometimes built from something spontanous. "Brainstorming sessions" are a good example of both-- you PLAN the session, things happen SPONTANEOUSLY within it, and new PLANS are formed with the outcome.
Do you consider yourself more of a "planner" or more "spontanous?" Do you believe you are clearly one, or the other, or do you recognize both working together, in your life?

it started in my early teens when i noticed that i imagine something and the opposite happens. i tried to experiment with my thought and imagined of the unwanted outcome, and viola! what i wanted to happen really happened! sounds cliche, but nope, it's an experience worth sharing.
it really depends what it is that's coming. some things need to be planned... and i mean, carefully planned. And there are things that just happen when they happen, when you feel like doing. there are times when small plans don't just happen (like go for a long ride this weekend, or i'll visit my friend tomorrow), and that's when circumstances don't abide by that you want to happen. sometimes, it's better not to plan...just do it! drive on a weekend or visit a friend. no planning needed. However, there are possibilities that might make you realize that you should have planned of doing so. Your friend could have gone somewhere, or she might have gone for a long drive too. that means you could have gone together if you did some planning, right?
the truth is, no matter how well you plan something, there will always be a single instance or two that's totally beyond your control, and sometimes controllable but you just didn't notice to soon.
to answer your question, i am a mix of spontaneous and planner, and i can't give a clear line between that. it's good have fallback plans though, you'll never know.

It is interesting how things sometimes turn out the OPPOSITE of how we want them to, if we are "trying really hard" to make them happen. Yet, the moment we "let go" of our need to have the outcome, everything just falls into place.

I guess there's a balance, like with everything else in life. Sometimes, I really plan things ahead and some others, I just let things be. I like planning on the way I will spend/save money, vacations. I just relax when it comes to the way I will spend my spare time, parties, etc.

Agreed-- finding balance is pretty important... although my "balance" seems to swing towards planning, when I am not looking... however, planning does seem to create a framework for more freedom.

I'm definitely a planner. I plan everything in advance. I know what I'm going to wear ahead of time. I think through everything that I have to do the next day, and research where I have to go if I've never been there before. I love planning things. I don't really like spontaneity. I like knowing what I have to do and making and plan and then getting it done.

You hit on something that resonates with me-- I don't really LIKE most forms of spontaneity. Some people get a "charge" out of the unplanned, but I mostly end up feeling anxious and on edge.

i think if i had to categorize myself in one or the other, i would say that i'm more of a planner. i've recently been trying to be more spontaneous and carefree, but like you said, trying to be spontaneous is planning. i think all people possess both qualities though. nobody plans everything they say or do or think or feel. people respond to emotions spontaneously. i am perfectly content with planning my actions and thinking things through, the only problem is that it doesn't leave room for mistakes and learning from them. so i guess that's what i've been trying to do lately, not so much trying to be spontaneous, but allow myself to make mistakes. they are necessary.

If I deal with things I deem very important, I should plan it ahead because you would have lesser blunders if you plan things ahead. However, most of the time, I do things spontaneously. This is because there are nicer things in life that do not require planning. Like falling in love, for instance.

True, there are things in life that are just more interesting if you don't plan ahead. Love, indeed, would be one of those...

I think for most part I'm a planned person. Starting from the grocery list to more elaborate trip plans, I'm all for it. Maybe at times spontaneity is at work too but I don't seem to recognize it. I like your analogy of how both work together and they cannot be distinguished clearly.

I'm a planner guy. Although I permit a little spontaneity in changes of plans once in a while. Making plans works for me since with limited time, it is hard to balance work and leisure when you don't know how to manage your time. Planning also enables me to use my time efficiently since I would be able to prepare for a planned activity ahead such that I cut down any overhead time wasted.
Having plans as well makes you certain enough to accomplish your activities. It helps you keep track of your commitments such that you'd more likely to keep up with it and that you don't fail others due to poor time management.
But of course allow some time for spontaneity. Cause a life on the planner would be boring and monotonous that you would question your happiness sometimes. So I suggest you allow some time to be just random. If you are afraid that you are just wasting time then devote this little time on things that are just for fun. Just be random and you'll find it good after all the monotony.

I love to work as a planner. Because it gives better output when you will do something with a plan. But, when I get some new inovative, creative and which doesn't require much thinking then obviously I react spontaneously.

I will consider myself a bit of both. For me it depends on the situation ands the time i have. If i have sufficient time for a work to complete i would plan it accordingly but on the other hand if i do not have enough time then i would not hesitate in taling a spontaneous decision. People may think that going with a planning keeps you on the safe side but in todays's scenario it is equally important to take spontaneous decisions.

I'm a planner. I make sure I don't miss out on anything important, but sometimes you have to have spontaneity as well, there are just some things that will not go according to plan, therefore you need to plan a backup (okay that's still planning), or at least be prepared to deal with it.

I plan a lot of activities in my life and even with all the planning usually they end up upside down, the best plans or activities I have ever done have been when they are spontaneous. Even with being the planner that I am I try not to plan activities that I do on the weekends, I like to have a general idea, like I am going to do something, but where I am going to go do it is open to the world that way if the plans fall through I am not so devastated if I had planned the entire evening, hope that makes sense. In other words I would call me a planner that likes to be spontaneous.

Funny how that works out that way, but some of my best memories have been spontaneous so I am always striving for that again and again and again

I understand how that works! In a sense, I am often using my planning as a "framework" for making spontaneous sidetrips.

I think I'm a bit of both. When it comes to serious things that affect work, I'm a planner. There are some things I can't risk being spontaneous with, if you know what I mean. However, if it's hanging out with friends or family, or just for the sake of having a good time, I believe that being spontaneous is the way to go!

I think that now a day i am a little of both, I used to be really spontanious, i moved 2000 miles away from home with a boy i only knew 3 months! lol it worked out we are married and have a baby now. But as i've become a mother i find i am making lists, planning trips, and even making plans with friends instead of just waiting around for something to happen. everything needs to be planned when you have a baby! So i think maybe i am a little of both and that is certainly working out for me.

I am definitely a planner. I hate not having a plan! I need to know pretty much exactly what is going to happen leaving very little room for surprises. I can be spontaneous for fun stuff, but the important things in my life (bills, my children's lives, etc...) I definitely have to plan out and make sure I know exactly what I'm doing and how I'm going to do it, otherwise I stress out a lot! lol

Actually I'm very spontanuous ... i just jump right into something and then think about it later ... its like the time i jumped off a cliff ..i could never plan that .. i just had to do it ... its the same for everything in my life ... i dont know how to plan ... i just get started and dig in ..if it works it works and if it doesnt well i guess i should have planned it out ... but i dont know how to do that for some strange reason ... i probably would never do anything if i had to plan it all out first ... but this really makes me think ... thanks for this discussion ... i think i will be thinking about this one for a while ....
