hi, some friends of mine are planning this trip to the land down under, I really want to go, but I still have this bad feeling about ebcounters with spider, snakes, bugs, and so on. I have heard all this horrible stories about spiders in bed, the kitchen, the walls, and snakes suddenly crawling all around. It FREAKS me out, I really mean it. I have humungous fear of these animals, I live in Norway, we may have a tiny, tiny spider here and there, not these monsters, who jump, make hissing sounds, bite and are big and hairy.....
So what should I do, should I go and face my fears, or should I stay home like a pu***, while my friends are going, and probably have the time of their life, and torment me to death with stories about how amazing it was. This is a huge dilemma for me, as I only have two weeks to decide, before they buy the tickets. Please help me out, is it safe enough, and please don,t tell any horror stories..

Come to Australia! It is a wonderful country and you will probably NEVER see a snake unless it is in an enclosed area in a zoo or somewhere. I have NEVER found a spider or bug in my bed, and there are none that jump, hiss and bite.
It is true that we do have the most poisonous snakes in the world, but they are not in civilised areas. They are in bushland and outback areas. Most Aussies have never encountered a snake.
We also have Huntsman (tarantula-type) spiders which are large and hairy, but not venomous, and do not attack, and are not often seen. In some areas there are trapdoor and red back spiders, but once again most Aussies have not encountered them.
Do not let such ideas prevent you from having what would be the experience of a lifetime. You will love Australia.

People do survive coming to Australia, you know. The only things likely to jump out and hiss at you are developers. The various animals, spiders and insects are a bit more tactful, and much better looking.
Really, a bit of common sense and paying attention when someone gives you safety instructions are all you need.
Basic information:
1. There are things to look out for. Look out for them, and there isn’t a problem.
2. Take things like snakes, sharks and crocs seriously. They are dangerous, but it’s like oncoming traffic. Don’t get in its way. If someone says “Get out of the water”, do it.
3. We do a lot of work on beach safety, and tourist safety generally. The only reason people get hurt is because they don’t know, or ignore, the safety measures.
4. You are quite right to have a healthy respect for poisonous animals. (I read somewhere that it means you have a good survival instinct. I have a cousin who’s about as sensitive as a bit of cement, and he’s really not into spiders, or being on the same planet as them.) Tell your friends to bring their brains. You leave the animals alone, they’ll leave you alone.
5. All animals can defend themselves, and that’s what they’re doing. Don’t make them get defensive, you’re OK. Just don’t get too close. They like their space, too.
6. We have a lot of medical and emergency people quite used to dealing with all these things. Most people get treated ASAP, and recover.
7. Do not underestimate the bush. If you’re camping outback, bring extra water, petrol and a two way radio. Any bush people will tell you how to notify the next place and let them know when to expect you, etc. It really is just common sense.
Serious incidents are very rare, and we’re hoping to keep them that way. Have a ball.

Hi - I live in Sydney and can count on one hand the number of times I have seen snakes.
It's not as bad as you think out here ;-) It's not like there are creepy crawlies at every corner waiting to jump out at you!
I went on a cruise on the Daintree River once ready to see a crocodile and was dissapointed when we did not encounter even ONE - had to go to a wildlife park instead to see one.

Well you practically answered this question all by yourself! You should definitely face your fears and not let all your friends have all the fun. It's so uncool to pass up any experience in your life, you only live once! I hate it when I miss a night out with my friends and I hear all about the next day. I feel like 'm not part of the gang anymore! So this is definitely something you should try. If you have a great time at least you can cherish some great moments in your life. If you have a really crap time at least you'd be able to say 'well, at least I can't say 'what if...' Besides, there's always a good thing out of the bad experiences in life. So yeah, just go and have fun!

Nooo not at all. You would be surprised at how many people would be afraid to travel to Norway because of their fear of the cold, and the long dark days when the winter is in! haha.
Plus, you are more likely to be run over by a car than even face a snake or spider in Australia!! haha. My brother in law is Indonesian, but lives and works in Melbourne, and he is totally afraid of snakes and spiders, but he never even thinks about it in Oz coz you just never see any really in the cities. They are driven away because of their own fear of humans! haha.
I am totally scared of snakes dude, and I would wet my paints and freeze if I saw one on the loose (not behind a piece of glass at the zoo! haha) but I would most certainly go to australia... Don't panic, and enjoy yourself out there, it's just like Europe dude. I guarantee you won't see a snake if you stick to the cities... and then if you go out in the bush you probably won't see one either! haha.

haha, you are probably right. Maybe some are afraid of the cold and darkness here, I have never of thought of it like that, haha.
I guess I won,t encounter any spiders, if I do, I,ll freak out, but as long as I don,t die, haha, at least it,s a fun story to tell.

Would you really want to give up a chance to go so far from your home just cuz of your fear? The way I see it you would just end up regretting it and regret is not something that anyone wants.

I detest spiders and all other insects. However, if I had the chance to go to Australia, I might forget about my fear for a while, at least until my arrival. Then I would take it from there. Don't let your fear of spiders put you off having a great holiday. It could be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Let us know how you get on, so that we can then make up our minds whether or not to go there in the future.

Some people scarried these insects, spiders, bugs and snakes. As long as you didnt harm them you will not attack by these creatures. When i was a child when we had a movie to watch and my cousins too. In the middle of the movie, the snake falled down beside the wall. The snake was sleeping and all my cousins are shocked and shouted. We are looking in the movie but no snake. We just laughed, because it was sleeping but it didnt happen again.
You just enjoy with your friends I think you will forget of scaring to these insects. Youare with your friends i think they will take care of you, dont miss a chance to have a great fun with them.
Happy trip!!!!

Do you have phobias of these creatures? Do you behave crazy if you see them? If not, then it's alright even on the rare occasion that you encounter one of them. They do not bite sting unless you provoke them or try to harm them, knowingly or unknowingly.
And don't let the fear of something stops you from doing it. Courage can be found at unlikely places. Just try and check out how Australia really is. Believe me, it would be nothing like you are imagining right now.

Oh come on. I have never been to Australia but there must be cities too there not everywhere is the wilderness or something. My ex boss went there before he got fired, no that's not a horror story and yes he came back alive and well! No snake or spider bites, he got bit by something else called jetlag. So that one you should be careful of I guess

Where exactly are you going in Australia?

all of us have fears and it's alright. but, you shouldn't let your fears stop you from doing things in life. especially if you have a chance to learn and have fun by travelling to another country.
things that we see in the movies are exagerated. they need to this to make the movie more exciting and therefore have more audience.
go ahead, have fun. face your fears cause that's the only way to overcome them.
