Urban Life vs. Quality Life

This is a post comparing the two kinds of life I've had the privilege to live...your comments, both for and against, are most welcome... I've lived more than half of my life in the metro (in the Philippines), growing up and going to school within QC, expanding that place to include Makati and Manila only when I began working. Knowing nothing of the kind of life I live now, I thought that metro living was it...the life, the works! In my mid twenties, work brought me to a new place - Cebu. It was a mix of urban and rural living. It gave me an entirely new experience and changed my view on "the life"...it made me realize that enjoying life didn't exactly mean having to endure crowded places, waking up in the wee hours of the morning just to beat traffic and make it to work on time, having nightlife and malling as popular past times. Life in the visayas combined the convenience of the metro and the serenity of a laid back lifestyle. When I hit thirty, I had to move to a more rural place - General Santos, because hubby's work had him assigned here. Now, this was a culture shock for me! It was more rural than urban. The remaining semblance of a nightlife/gimmick life I was used to totally disappeared here (needless to say, nightlife is almost none existent here; and the existing malls only offer the most basic conveniences and brands - no Havaianas, MOA, Glorietta/The Fort eating places, if you get the drift). After 5 years of living here, I'm what you can consider a e convert. Right now, I can't imagine going back to Manila/Cebu to live. I've gotten used to a laid-back life without horrendous traffic, maddening crowds, money-sucking nightlife and shopping. I actually got used to living on the most basic of neccesities and survived! In fact, I wouldn't trade this quality life for another. Next month we'll be moving to a new place - Butuan City. And my guess is it's gonna be more rural if not the same as life here. The upside? Life there is going to be a beach! (literally, because hubby's area is the whole Caraga region and it includes the world famous Siargao Island...surfing anyone?)...our quality of life now would be an even more laid back one, surrounded by the most beautiful works of nature. Do you think you're up to this kind of life? Will you enjoy it as I have? Or is life in the metro your kind of thing? Share your thoughts...

Oooh! Quoting All Saints' Pure Shores, "take me to my beach"! I'm a serious beach lover/sun worshipper/beach bum/water baby/whateveryoucallit, so I'm envious that you get to actually live the beach life! That's got to be one of the best things ever, especially nowadays that life in the city can get really crazy with all the pollution, noise and traffic. Personally though, I don't think I'm cut out for permanently living away from the comforts of air conditioned rooms, malls, etc, but it would be nice to experience going back to the basics with Mother Nature. ;) Especially with the beach just minutes away! Am so envious! lucky you.

Nice to know you're also a "beach bum". I can understand how permanently living away from the metro can be anxiety-building. I guess I was just lucky to have made the transition smoothly.

I think the perspective of qaulity life that your saying is that one which is not to urbanized am I correct? As for me, I love the slow rural life. I've visited a lot of provinces and I've seen the way of living. I love how it feels. Very relaxing and peaceful.

I've lived all my life in the city so If I'm going to choose between a city life and province, I would still choose to live in the city.I guess I'm not the kind of person that can stand a slow pace of life. I like the bustling city life.I love the lights at night, I even like the noise. These things are not present in the province.Maybe I'm saying this because I'm so used to city living that I'm not seeing the beauty of the slow and contented life in the province.Maybe when I'm older I can learn to appreciate it.

I was asked by my husband if I would survive living in the province and I said, I think I would. Since most of my contacts with my friends are through the internet and we rarely see each other anyway so living in the province, for me won't be much different (I guess). Since I also don't go out at night, hardly ever go to the mall unless I'm in the area, I don't watch movies. Just give me cable connection and internet, I will be fine hehe. Would love to live by the beach!

there are pros and cons to both city and rural life. city life is fast paced and most people are keeping up with deadlines and standards, but the good thing is that, you could almost find anything in the city. everything is accessible. on the other hand, rural life is somewhat a peaceful and simple life. it is a life wherein we could just get along day by day, no hassles. the bad part is that most of the time, its short of goods compared to city life

welcome to Butuan City and the Caraga Region..... Living in the provinces much more compelling than living in Big Cities like Metro Manila, or Cebu... Because of Traffic & Pollutions in metro manila & Cebu

Hi! Hm, you really made me think. I hate traffic. I'm not a mall rat and the nightlife has never been my thing. Maybe I would enjoy it. But the reason why we're still battling it out here in Metro Manila is that our families are both here and we want our son to grow up with both families. Also, I kinda like the idea of everything close at hand. And we want our son to study here, but we don't want him away from us. At the moment, we're trying to downplay the disadvantages of living in the city. We live close to where we work, which makes the traffic less of an issue. We also live close to shopping mall, so we just walk there if we need anything. But we enjoy the few times we get to the countryside. I'm happy for you that you're really enjoying your life right now :)
