Why do you write pieces like poems, novels, short stories, or articles?

Many of us find writing a good medium of expressing theirselves. Others consider it as a hobby, while others as a job. But nonetheless, for me writing is a way of self-expression. It is a therapy from all the triviality that comes into my life. It is a way of releasing the tension brought about by unfavorable circumstances. Personally, I write poems. It is my way of letting other people to know what I feel, think and perceive life in general. But that doesn'y speak the whole me, but only a part of me. It so good to feel when you realized that there are other people feeling just same way as you are. By merely sharing your work to others, I, in a way, provide a certain link to them.
But not all people appreciate what you did. Some will consider it as a trash. But that is fine with me. As long as there is only one single person who believes in my ablity, I can see no reason not to move on with my passion. Some says that if detractors come your way, it only means that you are good on what they criticized on. You cannot please everybody with what you're doing, but at least, have some niche of your own is enough. Personally, I take criticism in a constructive way, for me to improve my piece.
So, guys, share some thoughts. Tips in writing are also accepted. Enjoy!

writing poems, novels, short stories, articles is a form of art where we express ourselves. as a form of expression we convey different emotions, feelings, ideas for every poem or articles we make. Writing is one way of letting go of the things we cannot express verbally, or of the things better left embedded in words. I love to write. i care not if other people criticize my work. i take every criticism as a sharpening tool. constructive criticisms are easier to accept. harsh criticisms can hurt but i look at the good side of the criticism. but not being a hyprocrite, sometimes criticisms are just too painful to swallow. but i dont let these hinder me from writing. i can't think anything that will ever make me stop writing. I write as long as i live.

Good thing you're not affected by criticism. What really motivates you is your passion, and not to please other people. And that is a good characteristic of a writer. Well, for me, i'll still continue to write no matter what, as long as I have the ability to do that. Just keep on writing, right? We'll never know, by this, we can reach out to others. And I believe we can.

I can remember making up stories before I started school and being so happy when I could finally write them down on paper. As I grew older, I began to realize that I wrote for three reasons: 1. to inform others of whatever I thought, felt, believed; 2. to entertain readers with my creative imagination; and 3. to provoke some sort of an emotional response in them. Yes, I write to express myself, but let's get even more basic... Many of us write because we want our stuff to be read. I say to those who think my writing is trash, "But, you read it." It's really that simple for me. If you can achieve one of those three reasons with your writing, then you have the ability to write.
Constructive criticism helps for improvement, but remember, even those who criticize (constructively or not) have to read your writing. I had a professor in college who encouraged me to enter a writing contest and, believe it or not, I came in third place. Quite an accomplishment, if I do say so myself. After I won, she told me that I had the talent to be a published author. I told her that sometimes I just can't motivate myself to write and she told me the story of Ernest Hemmingway sitting at his typewriter everyday and writing something. Sometimes he wrote letters, sometiimes he wrote short stories and sometimes he just wrote stream of consciousness non-sense. The bottom line was, he wrote something. Keep up the good work. Write for you and you will find an audience.

That is an awesome attitude you have fatal_ivory:) It's good to take criticism in your stride and I think we learn something from it. I write poetry as a way to vent myself most of the times since my poems are an immediate expression of my emotions, moods and feelings. I recently published my first poetry book and I'm so excited!:) (http://www.lulu.com/content/679023)
If you have a good collection of what you've written, you should publish it too and put it up for the world to see.

Thanks for the advice. I'll sure do that in the future. But at this moment, mine is not as many as your works I guess. For me it is not practical at this time to make it published. I think I will take more time for me to have it compiled. Thanks for the encouragement again.
I'm happy for you that you may be able to have your own book published. Congratulations!
We, writers, are good instruments of arts and passion. Keep it up!

Good for you. You have the opportunity to publish it. As for myself, I have only the chance to share it with friends or anyone who have the same interest.

I've always written in some form or another. When I was younger, poems and stories were my medium. I was always a bit of a dramatist and a lot shy, so writing allowed me to be dramatic without sounding silly, you know?
In high school, I was involved in speech and debate. That dragged me out of the writing closet. I actually performed one of my dramatic pieces (it was interesting, the more I did it, the more relaxed with it I became) and qualified for the national tournament through it. Circumstances prevented me from going, but it gave me a little more confidence.
Recently, I began writing again. This time, for a business. I'm a content writer for their websites..I'm hoping it will give me a good foundation of experience so that I can being writing more opinion and informative type articles rather than sales type.
So, for me? Writing is a lot of things, and I guess it's been involved in everything.

Yes you're right. By means of writing, you maybe able to enjoy things that you want without anyone interefering because it's only you and the pen. Having it as a profession is I guess an overwhelming feeling. It does not only satisfy your finacial need but your mental needs and emotional needs as well. It has so many benefits. That is why I love doing it over and over again.
I'm glad that other people view writing that perspective.

Having that spirit and confidence is what really counts. Some great writers lose their opprtunity because of their lack of conviction that they can do it. I think in order for a writer to succeed, one must not only possess the writing power and the passion for the field but the personality as well. He must possess the confidence of a true-blood writer should have. Because it will show on his work. Good thing you have that. Keep it up!

My writings are also for therapy as well as my livlihood. After a lifetime on the road with my job, its good to finally have time to sit and write down those experiences and relive them - good and bad. It helps me realize I am only human and can make mistakes and that its a good thing - a characteristic growth necessary in my life.

I DONT know why I write poetry. Its like it controls me. I have been writing poems since I was little, more as a teen and different kinds now.
In high school I wrote about a guy I liked, now its more about christianity and God. But the poems come on their own, inspiration is anything! I can be in bed, in church, at work, in school. If a poem begins to write itself in my head and I DONT write it down it will NEVER be the same as if I worked on it when it first came out.
I am working on a memoir cause its something I was drawn to. I intend to finish it! I also will write my historical fiction and then lots of non-fiction. I like the idea of both. Of course nothing published, not even poetry. But its still fun!
I love writing IT IS ME! Everything else changed that I wanted to do with jobs except my writing. I have always wanted in general to write! Teacher, not anymore. Vet nope. Still want to be a wife & mother someday. But writer its always been and will always be EVER SO ME!

Writing music and poetry has been a Godsend for me. Since I was a child writing my own songs; words and music seem to come very naturally. I remember riding the school bus and teaching my friends a song I wrote. We would all sing my song all the way to school. It was so much fun. I wanted so much to do something with my music but I lacked confidence to really pursue it. Writing poetry and music has and continues to be very theraputic for me. It was the one thing I could do,and a way to get my thoughts and feelings out. It made me feel so fortunate to be able to say things that other people could relate to. Writing poetry has saved my sanity, when there was no other way to get my feelings out. It's a very safe way as well. There are times though, when I feel blocked; the words can't seem to come out. It's very frustrating, and I start thinking that I will never be able to write again. When I'm able to step back alittle, I realize that forcing myself to be creative and write something does not work. When I can remember to get out of my own way my music and poetry just seem to flow, and come from my heart. I have won some awards for my poetry and music which I'm proud of. Writing poetry and music is one of my life lines.

I write, only for self expression. Things that matter specifically to me, is the only things that I find worth writing about. Not that anything different is wrong, but for me, its just the way my mind works.
Basically I write to releave my mind from stress and muddle.. Any pain and anguish, I like to scribble into poems and songs.

Most of us consider it as a self-expression. Things that involve our personal preferences are the usual topics of our work. Maybe because we can relate to it easily. The source of our words are just within us, meaning our own emotions and insights or thoughts are the one taken into consideration.
Usually, grave emotions like too much happiness or sadness moves us to make work of arts.

As it's been said you can please some of the people some of the time but, not all of the people all of the time. I too, write as an expression using poetry, opinion and theory. I write primarily, to alleviate tension and, to relax an overactive mind. Although, I enjoy sharing my work with others, I expect that others may or may not relate to my work.
There are a few sites I visit that benefit my personal growth as a writer by way of feedback. (Links of which I can send at your request). As an example (and perhaps you should share one as well) here is one of my favorite poems that I wrote a little over a year ago.
FLAURA AND FAUNA
Existing contently within this moment
I embrace it's wonderment.
weightless as well as tranquil
resting upon an infinite section of granite.
I suspend subsequent time by way of
immersing into natures song.
Daylights flame blankets me from the
irony of it's cool westward breath.
Pleasing melodies emit from the beaks
of my soaring friends.
Appendages of densely colonized trees
vaguely shift from the gentle wind
as if to beckon "hello".
Absorbing entirely all that surrounds me
myself and this day have merged.
Keep writing and you will certainly improve, and if you would like feedback on pieces of your work let me know..I'd be happy to help.

I love to write articles, and I am working on a novel and a screenplay. None of these things are done for monitary gain, if that follows because my work is good enough then so be it, but for now I just write because I want to. I would like to build a portfolio of my work and be proud of the things that I am writing and submitting for others to read. I don't really care if everyone is pleased with what I have to say, but that I have the words with which to say it. For me writing is a freeing experience.

To be honest, I'm not really the type of person to just sit down and write a piece like a poem, novel, short story or article. I think it could be very therapeutic for some people but the only time I would write is when I had no choice and had to do it for school. I was always the worst at poems, I could never put words together very nicely...I enjoyed writing articles though..:)

Writers will always have their critics Fatal; it's inevitable, as not everybody enjoys the same thing, or has the same insight as another. I write a bit of poetry, and I never even dreamed of putting it out for public reading, until a friend in Mylot liked the way I expressed myself and gave me tremendous encouragement to show it. I haven't looked back since, and surprisingly enough to me, several people actually like my work.
I too write to express myself... my hopes, my fears, my likes, my dislikes, my loves and nature. I find that something will just come into my head at times, and other times, it is something I've held inside for a time, and need to let it out. That's when I take up my pen and write, and I can feel the relief of it flowing through my pen.
I've attempted stories before, but I get to a point where my ideas dry up. I ought to stick at it more because there's a lot of stuff in this old head that needs to jump out onto paper. Maybe one day, huh?
I have a site with my poetry on it, which perhaps you might like to read? If you'd like to, please let me know and I will get the URL to you.
Thank you for this discussion and good luck with your writing in the future. Maybe you'd like to share some of yours with me, too?
Brightest Blessings.

I write for reasons that may be considered strange. I am a playwright, and have been writing for the past ten years. I write plays that are often based on my experiences in life. A lot of times I write about things so I have control over them. I start with a story that has happened to me, and then I have the power to change it and make it better. I also write to relieve stress. Sometimes when I am struggling with a painful or stressful situation, it helps me to write about it. That way it is out on paper and out of my head. I have to admit, I have also written some "revenge" pieces. Meaning, I have written plays about things that have happened to my life as a form of getting the truth out in the open.

I agree.Writing is a wonderful way to express what you are feeling.I too, write poems. This is a relatively new venture for me, started some months back, although when I was in school 60 odd years ago! I loved to write and actually won a school prize. Now I find that the words just 'pop' into my head and I write tham down fast. My elderly neighbor just went into hospital and I was missing her. I wrote a long poem about her. Some I have shared with friends and they have been impressed but others I keep to myself.Maybe one day I will put them into a book. It really doesn't matter what others think of your work just keep believing in yourself and keep up the good work. You have a precious gift.
