In my community , women are kept at distance from everything including her husband during her m.c. Is there any logic ?

Of course not. That´s a natural thing not a desease. I really don´t understand, somethings, it seems that we are at th prehistoric age in some places, with all respect to all traditions, that don´t seem logic to me.

You're Indian right. I understand it's very common in your culture to seperate menstrating women from everyone else during her cycle. My wife used to work for an Indian family and told me even in America they do this. I've always felt it was an ignorant custom. To suggest a woman is somehow "unclean" because she's menstrating is ridiculous. It has nothing to do with hygene and everything to do with the belief that man is better and women are property. I've heard that the wife can't even cook the meals or eat with the family in these times. But does the man take over the chores? No, they have momma or the in-laws do it. They need to get out of the dark ages and join the rest of the civilized world if they want to be taken seriously by the rest of the world. Force

where in the world do you live. menstrual cycles are normal. why cast someone out b/c of it? besides, who would know when you have a period? do men get cast aside when they are cranky?

while some girls start menstruating early, 12 or 13 or even younger, does your area think these girls are ready to have children? my daughter is 16 and i hope she isn't even thinking of becoming a mother for another 10 years.

Since such a natural psychosomatic change in a girl is announced to the society , what may be the reason other than this . This is my expression of anger for such stupid tradition . In practice , among the educated classes and communities in my state , girls are no more married at the age of puberty . But the stupid announcement is made with celebration. However some tribal communities does not follow this tradition.

You are right fritz . The same is my question . Why should others know when a lady is having her period . I live in India . But please don't generalise to all people of India . It may be so that only my state might be the host of such tradition which I abhor . I have forced some amount of liberty at my home in this regard . You will be surprised to know that in my region , attaining puberty is a ceremony whereby the while society comes to know that this girl is ready for reproduction .Even the girls enjoy this .

I dont see no logic in this and I think that it is just a way for men to control women. So what I say is rebel and show your true womanly strength.

Your notion that men tries to control women especially in underdeveloped societies . And for making the women feel guilty of uncleanlyness the manfolk use this opportunity . You know certain religious sections of my society prohibits women from entering the core of place of worship on the pretext of supicion that some women may hide their m.c while entering , and that may invite divine curses. However , the movement against these has started .

You are right . I feel the more developed economically a society is the forward it is in viewing matters and events in true perspective .

i totally agree with you. I am apart of a religion that is the same way. I am hindu and the only differernce is that I grew up in America and from what I witnessed out here, some of the Indian traditions, to me, are very outdated and wrong because the fact of the matter is, if a woman is considered dirty when on their m.c. then shouldnt they consider a child to be dirty when they are still in diapers? People have to look at it from a logical point of view. It is natural and it happens to most women all over the world.

The logic is because it can be messy and unhygienic. Thats the only reason that I can think of. But I think the modern women bathe every day and are very clean. So I dont see there would be a problem as long as you 'behave' accordingly.

Well it isnt logical but that is a fact that during a menstrual cycle a women is more aroused than in normal, so maybe that is the reason they keep her away

So far sleeping with husbands is concerned ,your point might be right . But treating like untouchable is not proper I think . What is your opinion ?
• India

Your people need to come into the 21st century. Why should you be treated any differently just because you're going through a natural life cycle? It doesn't make you a different person.

You are right . This is a minor thing if you measure it by its harm to the society . In this era , people are being killed in tens every year on the pretext of witchcraft . Can anybody call a country like this a economic superpower only on the basis of its growth in software sector . I am from India .

Yes, behind this some scientific logic is their,at the time of periods women suffers frm lot of pains to give her rest in olden days where joint families are common this system is practiced

Yes your logic might have some validity during old days . But everything has changed and the outlook toward women should also change . If such pain haunts my wife I shold not keep her away during this pain . Other wise we will never feel that this tpe of somatic problem has some remedies also .

Yes. I know that I would prefer to stay away from my husband during that time. It would actually be easier on me because of the pain of the first few days. It would also be in the best interest of others if I was alone during PMS (the week before my cycle begins) too. ;-)

your personal preference is o.k . But it should not be imposed upon by any extra factor .And staying away from husband does not mean restricting all other day to day activities .

what do you mean by being kept at the distance?i didn't understand it too well..when i am on my periode i don't make any efforts, because it hurts very much, and i tend to keep a distance myself from my boyfriend because i feel very uncomfortable, but that doesn't mean that i don't speak to him or anyone, that i don't go out..or things like that..the first 2 days are worst, after that it is only a slow discomfort..for example i played tennis yesterday, and i was on my periode, but in the third day...what's wrong with that?:)

I mean to say that the menstruating woman or girl is not touched or allowed to touch the cloths of the household , touch the utensils , cook food , touch the well from which water is drunk , milk the cow etc. etc. I even saw some women of my village ( when I lived there)sleeping on earth with a minimum cloths below lest she had to wash too many cloths . During winter rug or blnket were not used by such women , because they were not washable. However , now a days these scene are not common.

I feel that is wrong to do. They can't help that they are having to go through this process and making them apart from everyone else is not going to help their already high emotions. Granted every culture is different, but here in the States you most of the time can't even tell when women are on their m.c. unless they say something about it or are parading around hygiene products such as at a store.
