My friend's 20 year old son is in jail for stealing from them.

His excuse for stealing from them was "I was doing drugs and made poor choices". He stole a total of around $5,000. He is not sorry for what he has done. He says that if they get him out, he will pay them back. My friend thinks that his son should stay in the jail and do time. What do you suggest ?
