One reading The Holy Qur'an loudly is like one who gives charity openly, and one who reads silently is like one who gives charity secretly. Sometimes it is more rewarding to give charity openly, when there is some good reasons and the intention is to induce others by the example. At other times, giving charity secretly is more virtuous, for instance, when the intention is to avoid show on one's own part or to save the recipient from humiliation. In the same way, recitation of The Holy Qur'an in a loud voice carries more reward when the intention is to induce others; besides, in this there is a reward also for those who listen. At times it would be preferable to read silently, so as to avoid inconvenience o others or vanity on one's part.

Reading it aloud is good, especially when one has gotten the Tajuid correct, but however, UNDERSTANDING it is what most Muslims dont do, intead relying on translations which dont do justice to its many meanings.
