Hydrogen as a gas on its own is dangerous, just look at what happened to the Hindenburg Airship. Used as part of a fuel cell, then the hydrogen can be produced when it is needed, water breaks down chemically to Hydrogen and oxygen, so this is much safer. Even stored in a hydrogen tank is not as dangerous as it used to be. Petrol stored in a petrol tank can be dangerous as well, even gas for caravans is stored in cylinders.
Unlike the liquified petroleum gas (LPG) which can be bought at many garages, and stored in a gas cylinder in the car, Hydrogen gives a much cleaner waste product, only water, whereas LPG gives out hydrocarbons, CO2 and CO as well.
