Ignore the BS from the guy above, its just an old arabic custom.
The Arabic letters of the opening phrase of the Qur'an (the Bismillah phrase Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim "In the name of God, the Compassionate and Merciful") sum to the numerical value 786 in the system of Abjad numerals. Not all Muslims place emphasis on this numerological analysis, but some Muslims in South Asia use the number 786 as an Islamic symbol, and Arabic custom has it to adorn Q´rans with those numbers.
Its just a symbol, like the minarets, the moon, etc, that has become asssociated with islam, no religious meaning behind it.

After doing some small tiny little research, the 786 thing is come from Sufism.
Sufism has own way to transliterate number into word, phrase or sentence.
Number 786 according to the sufi could be read as "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim". It means "In the name of Allah The Most Beneficient, Most Mercyful".
Don't ask me how they do that, for I also get dizzy thinking of it.
Since the method of transliteration do not come from Quran and Hadith, then we consider it as general knowledge like math, biology, encryption etc.
