This card is thought to be the card worth the most in the world. It was created back in the 1790's, and is actually a handmade puzzle which unfolds to reveal different heartfelt messages. What a neat idea! I can understand why this card, especially being such an antique, would probably fetch up to £4,000 if it were put on auction today.
What do you think of this card? Do you agree that handmade cards are more special?

I make my own cards and that something I've done since way back in grade school ( When I wasn't avoiding the occasional T-Rex, or two! :))
I've learned how much the ladies appreciate my efforts and they've always kept my cards even after many years...
My Love letters and notes (Remember those?) are still treasured and I love coming up with new stuff every Valentines Day! :)
I'm one guy who really gets into The Romance Thing, with Rituals and Special Meals and "You Know", in a very big way...
From the look of things, it looks like I might just be among the last of my kind...
I hope it's a wonderful Valentine's Day for everyone! :)
Oh, what do I think of that card?
Why, Shywolf, I think that you are worth every penny that it costs...
The buyer is sending it to you, isn't he? LOL! :)

Shywolf,
I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of men out there who are wondering if it's ok to be romantic anymore...
I'll bet that one day you will meet them, and if you let them know that it's ok to be that way for you, guess what?...
Love Will Abound! :)
Have a great day1 :)

Peaceful, I hope with all of my heart that you _aren't_ one of the last of your kind. I doubt that I will ever be happy until and unless I can find a guy a lot like what you just described yourself as being *laugh* It's really great to know that there are still guys out there who are big on romance, and who make homemade Valentine's cards and send love letters and notes. Amazing! ^_^

I would rather receive a handmade card over a store bought version. The verse inside a handmade card is often from the heart. Knowing that the hands of the well-wisher made the card makes it even more special.

It is a really sweet card, isn't it? I thought that it looked lovely. I wouldn't pay 4,000 for it, but then I don't have that kind of money to be spending on anything, lol! I'd love to make one like it myself, if i could, to give to someone special.

I do feel that the handmade cards are more special because they are made by that particular person and they used their thoughts and words for the card. It is more meaningful than choosing a card at a store with someone else's words though they are very nice as well. I can not imagine how long it took to create this huge card. It certainly would sell for a lot if they did sell it.

You know, I hadn't thought about that - the length of time that it must have taken for the person who created this card to come up with the idea, and make it a reality. I bet that it took them quite a bit of time, because there is obviously so much love and care put into not only the thought behind the messages inside it, but the thought and time put into the puzzle aspect of the card! Whoever was the intended recipient of this card was definitely one very, very lucky human being. I would give so much to have someone want to give me something so heartfelt and moving! ^_^

All I can say is Holy Sh*t thats one old card. They are right though that will wont see any cards that has a saying in them like this. Things were so much different back then it just makes you wonder what it would of been like growing up in those times.

LOL!! Your reaction to the age of the card is priceless, Nicole. You're right, it really is one heck of an old card! But a very beautiful one, as well!
I agree, it does make one wonder what it would have been like, growing up in the 1790's. I can't even imagine what the world was like back then, can you?

I love hand made cards more than any that could be bought. I really treasure them. This one is really neat for the time it was created, but I wouldn't want to pay it's value for it.

Oh, Forjosie, cards made with dried flowers are so pretty! You're giving me ideas of what I could do to make a really special card for someone in my life.. if only I had that special someone in my life, lol! But it's always good to have ideas stored up for when and if I ever do need to make a homemade card for someone very special! ^_^

It truly is a gorgeous card. You're right - there's no way in the world to put a price on love. Love is the most amazing, wonderful, beautiful thing in the world! ^_^ I've always said that. Love is the one thing that I've always longed for, more than anything else. And your words about the person who made this card being 'filled with such love' makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I can just imagine how much love the creator of that card must have been feeling for the one that they intended the card for. It makes my heart feel so much hope that there is someone out there that will feel that strongly about me one day, whether they make a card like this for me or not! ^_^

Was just at the grocery store today looking at cards and the only one that was remotely close to saying what I would want to say to my husband cost $5. It wasn't even that fancy of a card! I thought forget it, I'll make him one. We made him birthday cards this year and he loved it. Nothing really fancy, just some colored paper and markers with words from the heart ... not a card that hundreds of other people will be recieving. I wouldn't sell the card, it's way too special!

Ooh, that's lovely! I would love to see the birthday cards that you made for your husband this year. I don't blame you for not wanting to pay five dollars for a card. Believe me, I wouldn't, either. i was raised frugally, and to me, that much for a piece of paper just doesn't seem right! LOL!

4,000 is alot for a card, but I suppose its the history attached to it that makes it so expensive.
I love handmade cards and I have all the cards given to me from my kids they have made over the years.
So much more thought goes into it and I love the personal messages as well.
I have often made my own cards as well, especially to my kids and my partner.
I can add my own thoughts and feelings that is unique for them.

I agree! Handmade cards are easily the most unique way to gift your partner or loved ones with something that they could never get for any amount of money. I'm glad that you still have all of the cards that your kids have given you! I think that it's so sweet! ^_^

I don't think it's so much the card being handmade, but because of how old the card is and how perserved the card is...
Handmade cards to me are special because it's more personal, a person took time to make it. It's way more meaning than going to a grocery store and picking up a card..
I actually made all my cards myself :), I love doing things like that. I even made invitations for people and get pressed flowers and such..It's way more personal to me..
Good topic but wayyy too expensive for my taste to purchase a card...

I agree that it is more tha age of the card and the fact that it is in such great condition that is making it worth so much, you're right. But it is also so carefully hand crafted, and I'm sure that that went into the thought behind the pricing of the card. ^_^
I love hearing that you even make your own invites! I would love very much to see one of your cards or invites!! Have you ever taken a picture of one or scanned it and kept it online so that you could remember what you'd created? I'd love to see a pic, mzbubblie!! ^_^

Ally, oh boy do I ever agree that the format of this card was an amazing idea! I wonder what a simpler version would be like? If you do end up creating something like it, take a picture and share it with all of us here on the site! I know that I, for one, would love to see it! ^_^
Happy Valentine's day - a day early! ^_^

Carol, thank you for the early Happy Valentine's Day wishes. I'm wishing the same for you! ^_^ I'm glad to hear that your daughter took the time to make you a handmade card and gave it to you today (well, probably yesterday, since you wrote this hours ago. *laugh*) - that's so lovely! I'm sure that you will treasure it for a long time to come. ^_^

i think the card is really sweet. and yes, i think that handmade cards are more special because you have to start from scratch and whatever you do comes from your own creativity and feelings. however, bought cards can be just as special because it also depends on the message inside.
i hope that answered ur question !! =D if so, pls rate
thanks for a great discussion topic!!
take care !!

Marian, you did answer my question thoroughly, and of course you get a lovely plus mark for it! ^_^
I agree that bought cards can be really special, too. There is just something about homemade cards that make them feel so heartwarming. But I would never say that no bought card can be as special as a handmade one. After all, someone could write a loving, heartfelt, caring, romantic message inside a bought card, as well, that could be the most beautiful message that you've ever received - and that could definitely not be any less special than any hand made card! ^_^

Well, looking at the picture, she sure did have great penmanship!!!
If you are talented enough to be able to write beautiful words in view and meaning, I think I would prefer to have a homemade card than a store bought card any day!

You're right, she had beautiful handwriting, didn't she? It's such a beautiful card, and so sentimental and heartfelt. My heart would be touched forever if someone gave me a card like that one, let me tell you! I agree that i would prefer to have a handmade card over a store bought one anyday, but - still, I would be so happy to get a card at at all, especially a lovely Valentine card, that it wouldn't matter too much to me where it came from, lol! As long as it was meant from the heart! ^_^

Wow, I am in amazement that it has lasted for so many years. Truely a piece that was meant to be treasured and admired by many (ok did that make me sound like not all my marbles are in place? lol) In it's simplicity and heartfelt writting is what has made it beautiful.
I enjoy making cards instead of buying them from a store. I also enjoy receiving hand made cards over store bought. To me it makes it more special that someone actually took the time out of their day to create something for me. Although I do appreciate the card as well when it is store bought. I live by the phrase "it's the thought that counts" all the time when receiving cards or gifts.

I have to agree with you about trying to live by the motto that it's the thought that counts when it comes to not only just cards, but all sorts of gifts. I would be happy to receive a Valentine from anyone, whether store-bought or handmade, believe me! I'm not sure how long it's been since I've gotten a Valentines day card of any kind, except maybe from my best friend. And I do value all gifts and would never look a gift horse in the mouth, to quote another popular saying ^_~

It is a beautiful card, and if handmade cards were like that, then they would surely be better than anything store-bought. However, sometimes, it is much harder to make something, because we do not always have the words to say, or maybe the creative ability. I love buying cards, and when I was younger, I used to make a lot also. I hope that I can be able to make more cards in the future, along with the ones' that I usually buy. I believe that that card is valuable, and if someone bought it for someone else, the reciever of it, should take very good care of it, because it is also a collector's item.

I totally understand what you're saying. I don't always feel creative enough to know what to write in a handmade card, myself, and I am by nature a sort of arty person. I've always been into crafts and things, off and on, and have always been into artwork - and I still don't always have the inspiration to create something I would consider to be good.
I agree that if anyone were to buy that card, the receiver should take amazingly good care of it. It is a treasure, that's for sure! ^_^

What a neat card. Gave me an idea for the card I am going to make for hubby. We used to buy and sell antiques a few years ago before hubby injured his back, and we got to see some really neat old Valentine's cards. There was great love and passion writtin in those Valentine's. I do agree, hand made is posativly much more special. I have not bought a card in quite a few years now : )

I'm glad that you love handmaking your cards, carmella! Aw, that's really sweet! I would love to get to see a lot of lovely old handmade Valentine's cards like the one shown in the link that I posted. It was really fascinating getting to see something made so long ago, especially something filled with so much love and meaning. I never thought about someone in the antique trade getting to see old Valentine's day cards like that. I bet that you saw some really amazing ones in your time! ^_^

Wow that card is over 100 years old. Do you know any idea why this card was so special and how it got me be 4,000 dollars? I will admit it htough that is a pretty neat idea the creator of this card had. Also I do agree that hand made cards are more special cause it showd that someone actually put effort into somthing they want to give to you not just throw 5 bucks on the table for a card. Usually handmade ones are just as good as store bought ones too.

Volcom, I'm afraid that I don't know anything more than what info was posted in the article, but I wish that I did. It would be great to hear even more of the history behind this lovely card, wouldn't it?
I agree that handmade cards can be just as good as store bought ones! And if you can't do either, there are always online greetings - and while some may consider those impersonal, I think that you can find some of the coolest flash animated ones if you look hard enough, that will make your friends and loved ones smile and laugh longer than a paper card would! But if you're sending a paper card, there's no doubt that a handmade one is the most special way to go. ^_^
