it's election once again here in the Philippines. and while i swore not to meddle with politics for the longest time, i jst can't help but say "Whhaaatt?!??" about Manny Pacquiao and Richard Gomez running for posts. It's like "What the hell do they know about politics?!" I know it's rude to claim they are incapable of serving the public, but will it ever come again when seasoned actor-turned-politician ex-President Joseph Estrada and the like again run a country well known for political instability??
They have the right to go for it, like we all do, but then again, why be a Senator at first shot?? They can be municipal/city councilors first, can't they?
And the thing about Manny... he's been an idol and inspiration among Filipinos people. And now he decided to join the club. Doesn't that mena he's a potential "puppet" of those who once supported him and secretly smiling and saying, "it's payback time..." Poor Manny, people would love him more!

I don't know these people (I'm American) and don't know much about politics. However, it's always been my belief that being an actor is no less a qualification for doing a good job in the arena than anyone else. Or more qualification, for that matter. I think that their status as actors/celebrities needs to be taken completely out of the question of whether they can do a good job, or they won't be judged fairly. But, I was glad to read this in your question:
"They have the right to go for it, like we all do, but then again, why be a Senator at first shot?? They can be municipal/city councilors first, can't they?"
That's a valid question, and makes me see you aren't just lumping anyone in the entertainment field as unqualified, but saying they should start small and learn before doing something big. That's a good point. And, something that I would say to anybody, regardless of the field they started in.

If they do there jobs i have no issues with them.
Personally it's quite interesting to see them change from movie stars into politicians. I think mr arnold schwarzenegger i think he's doing well to try and tackle global warming in the states. as most seem to be ignoring it and they are the worst for this. =)
He does drive a mad car but we've heard over he's cutting to a cleaner car.
Kudos!

Even if most of the Filipinos do not welcome this scenario, there's nothing much that we can do about it because, we do not have an electoral college. I believe that this is one truly pressing issue which we must suggest to our congressmen which must be addressed immediately by passing a bill to this effect. Otherwise, election in the Philippines shall be kept at its present level - the popular vote rather than the the more desirable intelligent vote.
Those who do not have any idea about what the lawmakers are supposed to be doing, are voting for the people they know most, this time the actors and actresses who are quite popular both in the movies and tv appearances. This is what we get for having a very lax requirement for voters and for those who desire to become a servants of the people (as they claim).
The present scenario is even worsened by the meddling of various religious sects. I don't know whatever happened to the underlying principle regarding the separation of the church and state.
