I really didn't want a new dog...much less, a new puppy! I am the one that has to train and take care of them! And when I already had 2 dogs and 7 kids...the last thing I wanted was another puppy. But I gave in because my partner's birthday is Valentine's Day and he was so set on getting a mini Dachshund. So we looked for just the one that he wanted for over a week. And we found what he was looking for yesterday morning. :) She is a cute little thing! She weighs a whole 3 lbs! And she is AKC registered. Which, we should be receiving the title in a couple of weeks. But this is what upset me the most.... We called the man that was selling her and it turned out she was the last puppy because she was the runt (he said it as if being smaller was a bad thing). Which is fine because our other two dogs are the runts also. But he knew that we would be there in an hour. It turned out to be an hour and a half. And when we got there, he handed her to us saying that she definitely had the puppy smell. What? That was not a 'puppy smell'!!! That was a stink to the high heavens!!! She smelled so bad that I and my partner had to wash out clothes and coats right away. We could not drive home without the windows cracked! I have smelled some bad dogs...but this just topped it! When when we brought her him and bathed her right away, I also discovered that she had the worse dirty ears I had ever seen also. But wait...it gets better....or worse, really. She is 3 months old and hadn't seen a vet. OK. Fine. I don't want to wait to take her to the vet so I took her first thing this morning! Turns out, she has hook worms! The poor baby has hook worms and we have to give her medication to kill them off AND pick up and throw away her poop for the next month! How is it that a man can sell an animal that he takes pride that the father has won two show championships and not care for the puppies at all (or at least the runt because she was the last that nobody wanted)??? He should have at least cleaned her up! My partner thinks that we should call him and have him refund 50 bucks out of our $250 for the hook worm medication. But I think he will refuse because worms are common and is a preventative thing that we give our dogs a monthly pill for. Do you think that we should call the man and ask for a $50 refund? Or just take our losses and be grateful that I got her to the vet right away? She is a little cutie!!! And is as sweet that can be!!! OK...so I don't mind so much now that we have a new puppy since she is sleeping in my lap as I type here at myLot. :)

My little puppy came from a wonderful breeder who drove him halfway accross the country so that he wouldn't have to fly in a heat wave. He's a great dog, and had seen a vet prior to me getting him. However, he still had worms, as well. Puppies get worms. And we treat the worms. That's just how it is. That is a very inexpensive puppy for a dog who's father one championships. I would just cut your losses, and be very happy that you have a new little cutie to cuddle! Some people are idiots, and don't hold these little animals to as high of standards as us. :) Good luck with your new bundle of joy!

That is what I told my partner. Puppies get worms and we just have to treat and prevent it. Hopefully, he will not pursue asking the man for money to cover the medication. But that is why I also wanted input from people here. Thanks for your opinion! All opinions still count as a positive in my discussions. Just be well written and enjoy the conversations! :)

True puppies do get worms, but that's why they should have been treated by the breeder .. as much for the puppies sakes as to make sure the worms don't spread around his own dogs ..

Personally, I would call him and read him the riot act. He's obviously not a responsible breeder, but rather one of those who treats his dogs as a commodity to be bought and sold, and only cared for if they are worth the investment. Also, I would ask your vet whether you think the ASPCA should be called on this man. It seems rather negligent to me that the pup had never even seen a vet before being adopted out, and if the smell was as bad as all that, that probably means the living conditions the poor little dear had to endure were rather deplorable. Breeders like this make me sick. I bet his show dog has never had to deal with the mistreatment he gave this poor puppy!

I completely agree with you! I would like to call the SPCA!!! But even my vet said that I would be surprised at the conditions some animals live in! And since he does not call himself a breeder and implies that he was just selling the litter...and this was the last one...I have been told there is no point. If he doesn't make a living of it and there are no more puppies, then there is nothing that the SPCA can do. Thank you for your passion! I was very upset at the condition she was in and I didn't even get to see where she was kept! We were on the front porch the entire time. :( But if I had seen the condition...I would have been sure to call!!!

Congrats on the new puppy. I'm sorry that you had such a bad time. I really don't know what I would do. Part of me would be mad at the guy but the other part would be thankful if worms and a little smell turned out to be her only problems. When my dog had puppies awhile ago, we told people up front that we had not dewormed them or gotten their shots, we just didn't have the money to do so. But we did bathe them prior to the new owners picking them up. I insisted on that. And we were giving them away for free. Ok, I changed my mind, I think you should at least send him a letter explaining why you are not happy with how he handled the whole situation. Maybe he will do better in the future. Thats just not right.

Giving them away for free is another thing. :) And would you believe...that my KC that I received for free also was free of any worms even though she had not been de-wormed! :) So far, my partner has not called him. But I think that when I received the AKC title from him, I will probably send him a letter. Thanks for the input. :)

Ahhh!! She's so adorable!! I'm sorry for all the trouble you've had with her so far. It's sad that the previous ownder didn't take better care of her. Sweet little thing. I really don't know what to say about asking for a refund. I think maybe you should at least try. You did just get her this weekend and you took her to the vet right away so you can prove she didn't get them after you got her. I think he should pay for the medicane but I'm not sure he will. I wish you all the luck with your new baby.

I worry that his other dogs may have hook worms if they are not given a monthly pill to prevent them.

How can he sell dogs in that condition? He must just be in it for the money. He obviously has no compasison for dogs. The puppy should have been to the vet and already started his shots.I thought that that was normal procedure to have them taken care of from the moment they are born. I think you should ask for the $50. refund. All he can do is turn you down. If you get it, it will help pay for the vet bill. Glad the puppy has a good home now.

I thought it was normal procedure that the owner or breeder took the pups to the vet at 6 weeks! But she was in such poor smell and looked sad, we didn't want to leave her there!!! I know she knows she has a far better life with us!

hey puppy lover, i suggest you one thing that keep them clean from diseases and have regular check ups and treat them with care and love and you must give them proper feed and make sure to keep away from out siders.

Congratulations on your new and beautiful and adorable puppy. Lilly is so cute. She is very fortunate to have such a wonderful owner and am sure you two will have lots of fun together. She has to be the cutest puppy I have ever seen. That is terrible that this person would treat their puppy like that and should be reported for animal cruelty. I would be grateful to have this beautiful dog and be able to take it the vet so it would be well and happy again.

Would be a definite call to share your experience with him in a calm and polite manner. Perhaps it will make a difference. Can you report this to some authority? The place where you get the paper/title? Should be something that someone even the veterinarian could get in on to report this. Good luck with this and I hope this dog does not cost you any more money.

She's a little cutie and I can see why you think she's so sweet. With regards to the seller. I don't know about the laws in your state but in Florida if you sell a dog or cat, even for a penny, they have to have had all their shots and be cleared by a vet to be in good condition. You might want to check for your state to see if there is a similar one. If there is a law for it then you could press charges against him. If there isn't then I would call him and demand the money for the vet. That is the least he should do considering the condition she was in. I agree with you about runts. I've had several and usually they end up very big. Don't ask me why though but they do. I hope things get easier from now on.

First of all, I am so jealous! She is the cutest thing I've ever seen! What is her name? We had 3 miniature dachshunds while I was growing up and I really want one, but I'm not home enough to take care of a dog. They are the best breed- they're unbelievable with children. Enjoy her! She's lucky she has found such a good home. I would definitely call the breeder and explain the situation and how you feel. I would even let him know that he should be ashamed of how he treated that puppy, and that it was bordering on neglect and abuse. If he refuses to pay you for the medication, I wouldn't be surprised. But he should know what you think of him. At least you took her to the vet. right away and she'll be fine. She's going to have a good life now.

I think she is going to have a great life now too. Thanks! I so badly want to call him and give him a piece of my mind. But I do not want to make bad yet because I am waiting on the AKC title from him.

That is so sad, I am glad you pup is in a good home now. You are right, the breeder was a sh*thead and should give you back some money, but my guess is that is why you got the pup for so cheap. He did not take care of it and just wanted to get rid of it. I hope you told the vet th breeders name. It would seem that there should be a list of bad breeders so that people can avoid them when looking for pups. What did you name the pooch?

She really is adorable. I don't know what purebred dogs go for, but it sounds like he gave you a break because she is the "runt". My thoughts are that this "breeder" knew that he couldn't get top dollar for her, so didn't "waste" his money on bringing her to the vet. Shame on him!

Being that she is considered a red mini dachshund, it was a pretty average price for her. Most reds cost between 250 and 275. So, he didn't really cut the price...I just think he didn't care. Very sad.

What a cute puppy! I'm so glad she's with you and in a nice home where she'll be taken care of (and a little spoiled!) instead of with the breeder who was not taking care of her.

What I would have done was get the vet to write something saying the dog had not properly been taken care of then sue him for all the money back. It only cost 25-35 buks to sue someone and from the sounds of it you would have had no problem winning your case. I think your right though the guy isnt going to refund you nothing he sounds like he might run a puppy farm. Report him to your local animal control and maybe fines can be served.

OH my gosh Tia, she is soooo cute!!! hehe Anyway..I'd maybe try to get $50 refund back...but then again knowing me I'd just leave it be. I think its totally wrong that he sold her to you all with hook worms. Poor baby. Give her cuddles for me!

I would definately call them and ask for the $50 back. Afterall, if he says no you're right back where you are right now. I think it's terrible that someone who says that they love animals would let the puppy get worms. If they're selling puppies for $250, you think they could afford to take the puppies to the vet.

Oh that badman to sell you a poor puppy...It's nice this puppy was lucky to have you..I am so proud of you guys for taking care of that puppy right away. You deserve to be refunded but you'll just get into an argument..so instead of wasting your time on that man..let it be...You'll be rewarded for your kind deeds and he'll lose something for cheating on what he sells.
