Politics at work

As most of us who are working in an office wl agree that there is a lot of politics among the co-workers? Some people involve willingly in it to become favorite of the boss and to get benefits... but others who are only concerned with their work somehow get involved automatically... dont know how...and become the scapegoat...and sometimes have to quit their job also due to the ongoing politics... can they do something for themselves...how can they be there without getting into it? Somebody told me "Look! its a part of life....consider the office politics as a game of chess"
