The "star" reputation system.

United States
February 12, 2007 1:02pm CST
The "star" system only started a short time ago and it is rated on a (secret) reputation calculation and your star shows rating by percent. I have seen quite a number of time the question of how can some people who have only got 200 point have ten star? It is simple to get a ten with low points, example 200 points reputation 98% only needed 196 of these posting to meet standards (secret) whereas when they started awarding the star many members had 1000 points (or more) so they would have to have 980 quality postings not so easy. So what I am getting to it would be easier to sabotage someone who had low points than someone with high points. So please be careful when using the rating system (also secret) and don't just check (-) because they disagreed with you or you have a personal vendetta against them.

I haven't liked this system from the beginning and I've said so from the begining. As time goes on it appears that more and more people are beginning to agree. What makes me sad is seeing folks who were a high 10 a few weeks ago and now they are a 6 or 7 even though their postings and answers are as good as ever. They lost all those points to a vindictive button pusher. That sucks! I've never given a negtive and I hope I never have to but it would only be given for extreme rudeness.

I am still a 9 but I don't think I will be for long because my reputation dropped 2% last week and 2% more since yesterday so I must have aggravated someone but if I did it must have been before I made the decision to be a "mealy mouthed responder", which for me is going to be hard!!

I keep hoping mylot will have some kind of alert in place when someone gives a certain number of negetive marks. That way they could find these people and give them the boot. I also never rate a negetive unless it is spam or very rude, lude or hateful. I never rate - because I don't agree, in fact often I rate a + to people I don't agree with. I try to be as fair as possible. Sometimes I just don't rate them if it's offensive but not quite enough to be a - or if it's a stupid one line comment.

Great point, but something else I have notice about the star is two people can have 95% but one has a red 9 star and the other has a blue 10 star. If anyone noticed mine yesterday, it was red, but it was a 95 as it is today. I am so getting over this rating thing personaly. I rate according to the rules, and I never missing doing so, but I personaly could care less any more.

Good for you. You can call me anything you as long as it's not early on the morning. That was my father's favorite response many many years ago in Glasgow.

Great calculation there, whiteheather!;) If that's the case, we should be more cautious on what topics we should respond to. We all know that having a high reputation helps us alot to boost our confidence here. I think I better post more relevant and interesting topics to preserve my rankings. I think we should all now help each other, for the points and for our sake. Thanks so much for a very reliable info.. =)

Yes Whiteheather I totally agree with you there. I have noticed a lot of my good Friends have gone down drastically in their Star rating, and I would love to know why, as they are great People and have good Discussions. But their ratings have dropped, I am starting to believe there are People on here that are out to destroy good People and it is not fair.

Even when we were not on the star system, it has always been important to rate fairly. We should not over rate, because of friendship, and we should sparingly rate - in my opinion. I am much more likely to rate !, which I have to explain, than - which requires no explanation,

According to MyLot they look at why negative ratings are given, and check to see if it is justified. I only give negative to those who have very short answers or totally irrelevant ones, if someone is really abusive I will report them as well, but on the whole I rate with a + or not rate at all. I always give a rating where I give a response. I have seen only one person with a rating of 1 star and I'm really surprised they managed to reach that level after reading a few of the responses. The star system is only a guide to rating members, and if someone is having a personal vendetta against you then Mylot should eventually do something about it. I'm surprised that you've got less than me, as I feel the quality of your responses is better than mine and you've started a lot more discussions then I have.

Thank you for compliment. I said in the above comment I know ecactly how and when I lost my reputation percentages and the higher your points are the harder it is to regain the percentages back.

I wasn't going to respond to your discussion..not because of you or anything you have written. But I honestly believe there are people among us in mylot that rate - for the fun of it. I have seen in other posts, more than once a person say "my friend rate everyone with a 10 star with a - because no one is perfect" I firmly believe that there are people that do that. It's unfortunate that we have to have such jerks among us. I wish there was a system in place that alerts mylot when someone gives out say more that 3 - in a day or something to catch these ignorant people. I've just about given up caring about my reputation rating, there's no point in dwelling on it for now. I think eventually mylot will make changes to that too. So we all have to hang in there and try our best to not be affected by jerks that lurk here.

I'm going to keep saying this until mylot.com does something about it, or boots me .. mylot.com can stop a malcontent minor from going around knocking down other peoples' ratings out of spite .. they have the tracking info and can stop members from giving negative ratings out on someone just for spite. So, the question is: when will they start doing that?

Thank you I had no idea what the stars meant nor how to get them, As well I have no idea why people get upset about the payment system, I didn't come to mylot to make money and perhaps that is why I can't understand, as well I do not do referrals, because I do not know that many people that enjoy these sites as much as I do.I do so enjoy the discussions and a lot of the topics, as well I am learning a lot of new things I never knew before, You can not beet that for payment

I've only been here a short time but have a few thoughts to share. I recently saw an alert in which mylot sent out that if a person was targeting a specific member it wouldn't be that member that would see any difference but the one doing the negative rating repeatedly. So that being said I have to wonder if, it's not the responses that are being rated negatively but the discussions started that are being rated negatively. The reason that I say that is based on what mylot stated both in the alert and in the guidelines, if multiple people were rating something negatively then the star would fall where as if just one person was doing the negative rating your star would stay the same and theirs would be dropping. So say you start a discussion that either many people don't like or it's not clear what was being asked or for many other reasons, that would have a sever affect on your rating and I don't think mylot has things in place for that, I may be wrong but they didn't address that. Also one other thought comes to mind as to why it's so hard to get the star back up and that's because so many members when responding to a discussion don't read the responses and therefore don't rate the members, or they read the first few posts and my rate those and they post theirs and leave. I don't rate all responses in another's discussion but I rate the really good ones, and ones that didn't bother to read the post that just type in a bunch of non sense I rate accordingly and I report the abuse. But even though I read all responses I don't rate them all, in others discussions that is. So the point that I'm trying to make is that the star rising goes much slower because people don't rate it as often to get it to rise. As always this is just my 2 cents worth. I mean no offense to any one, just stating what I have observed and read here. :) Gives us something to think about. :)

Thank You. That great response certainly makes sense. One person whom I know targeted me (she told someone else) must have been at least a help to a 4% drop in in my reputation, within a week, and she is still here.

Ugh! I wonder why mylot doesn't get rid or send warnings to these people? I have read many discussions regarding the dropping of peoples stars overnight. I know that we all received an alert about it, but I fear that most really paid little attention to it. I as always have rated you "+" as that is the highest I can give, would give you many "++++++++" if I could. Alas I will have to be happy just rating a "+" to every discussion of yours I enter. :)

Thank you for this post, so guys, you mean to say that our star ratings either go up or down depending on the other people rating our responses? so if someone disagrees with you and gives u a (-) your reputation drops? awww.. that hurts...i started here as 8 then went to 9 then i became 10 now im back to 9 with a grade of 82/100 which was a huge decline from my grade this morning which was 97/100 and a 10 star... this hurts... can i also ask if this star reputation system is also affected by the number of discussions we start and the number of responses we make?

It's not affected by the number of discussions or responses but it is affected by the quality of these postings. As you can see, by the responses, the most damage is caused by spiteful people who target you with (-) ratings. (You get a (+) from me for this response).

That makes perfect sense.. I seem to keep going from a 10 to a 9 to a 10 to a 9.. :( Not sure what I'm doing or who's feathers I'm ruffling but I am. So right now I'm a 9 again... I dont rate negatives unless the person is making deragatory about me personally- This has happened only once. And I always write responses that actually answer the question.. i don't always agree with the poster but I do say it nicely if I disagree. Thanks for explaining the star rating!

wow! this is pretty detailed information! i sure hope to be one of those people who have a ten rating with 200 posts! lol but i know its not half as easy as that the wariness of being negatively rated is a spectre always looming me,i must confess. i usually steer clear of strongly worded articles for i question the person initiaiting the discussion to see my point of view and not go loco about it. people should definitely pause and ponder before rating some1 negative.
