What is Broadband Internet Connection...?

One of my collegemates subscribed for a 'Broadband Internet Connection' at his home a few days ago. He says he gets download speeds of 80-90Kbps(Transfer Rate) almost at all times(peak as well as non-peak hours). I get hardly 7-10Kbps with my DialUp connection. Can someone please tell me the reason behind this difference?
