Now this is a very strange theif or good will fairy, not sure. What's your take?

We had someone break into our garage. Well that sucked but...
this theif took the time to reassemble a bike that I had taken apart to clean and fix up a bit. That I am sure would have taken a half hour or more to put together but they did it and then they took the bike.
But they didn't take it very far. We found it behind our garage all together, just sitting there. Most bizarre thing if you ask me.
by the way I have things much smaller than a bike that are worth far more but they didn't take anything. They even put the tools they used to put the bike together back where they belong.
I am still puzzled by this.

There are people in the world who will do things like that - go into people's garbage and fix things that have been thrown out. They consider themselves good Samaritans and just want to anonymously help people out a little bit. I saw a human interest special on a guy who did things like that - he did it with appliances people left out on the curb. Don't know if that's the case here, but it does happen.

That is the strangest thing I have heard for a while. I know people that pick up all kinds of stuff at the curb on the day we have to get rid of anything we want to get rid of except for toxic stuff. They take stuff and fix it up to sell but they don't bring it back fixed. :)

Misskatonic is right. There's a show on the HGTV channel about two brothers who do this. They pick up an article that someone has thrown out with their garbage, fix it, or convert it into some other useful item, then return it to it's owner. It's a pretty interesting show. They once turned an old bike into a ceiling fan, then returned it. Part of the intrigue is to not get caught returning it, and filming the owner's reaction when they find the fixed or converted item.
Hmmm! Perhaps your mystery elf is a fan of the show, and was emulating the brothers, who star in the show???

Probably some juvenile male thought he wanted to steal the bike. He probably is someone you know who has been in your garage. After he put the bike together and rode it a very short distance he found something he did not like about the bike. That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

Do you have a neighbor with Autism, or some other mental impairment?
I used to volunteer at the Autism unit of a county psychiatric facility, and this sounds like something that someone with Autism would do. Particularly the part about cleaning the bike up, and putting the tools back in their place.

Wow, that's strange! I can't believe some one would do that. Someone stole a few things from our property once. We had some gas cans sitting out in the summer to refill our lawn mowers and they just disappeared one night. About a week later they were back. They didn't have any gas in them or anything, but the cans were back! Someone also stole our wheelbarrow and brought it back about a week later as well. We've had a lot of strange things happens at our house, but never anything like that!

This is really funny. The thing is there are many peculiar thieves who always set some pattern in their thefts. Some of them are even more bizarre than what you have quoted here. But thankfully, you did not lose anything.

lol, that is very odd indeed. My guess would be that it was some teenager who knew the bike was there. But maybe after assembling in and taking it for a short distance his conscience got the better of him. You're right though, too bad he didn't return it with a bow, lol

This may be unusual, but it seems to me that you have a friend out there. They fixed your bike for you. The "thief" could just as easily sold your biks and made a few dollars.

LOL! How very strange! I really cannot give you an answer to this one, except that maybe he/she was just a very strange thief!!. Maybe if he/she was a local person, then on the way out of your place, someone spotted them, and challenged them because they recognsied the bike as yours, so the thief just panicked, dumped it, and ran off! I guess it will always remain a mystery.

Well you know that is a possible answer. Never thought of that. They may have put it behind the garage so no one else would see it and take it. Thanks
I would be funny to have someone walk up to me in my yard and ask me if I ever found a bike behind my garage. :)

That would puzzle me to, if it had happened to me. i don't really understand why anyone would put the bike together and not take off with it. who really knows, and i guess you'll never be able to find out either.

I don't imagine that I will ever find out who did it and why, but it would be fun to find out.
The fact that it was left behind our garage is the part the seems very strange. They had to fix and then take it outside and around to the back of the garage. It was a shorter distance from the garage door to the road than to the back of the garage.
Strange things for sure.
