dog is out of control help please!!!

My dog has gone crazy. We live on a hill about 3 football fields from the main road. About 4 months ago, we started taking our dog with us in the car. We take him to the beach, to the doctor to the hardware store. Never too long, unless we go out to the beach. Now, everytime we leave he chases the car. Not only does he chase but the literally follows us. My husband had to get on the main road to go a few miles down the road the other day and the dog followed him onto the main road, honking cars and everything. When my hubby finally corralled him into the car, he jumped out the window while the car was in motion! No harm done, except for a large gash in his leg but I am worried. I am scared he will get hit one day. Does anyone have a cure for this?
