What Should I Do?

I used to be an elementary school teacher in an urban school district. Last year I resigned, mainly to stay home with my 2 kids but also because my principal was a stupid, unethical, lying jerk. 9 out of 14 teachers resigned or transferred from the school last year. The powers that be ignored all of our complaints - until this year, when they realized he was also misappropriating funds (apparently mismanangement of staff and students, failure to follow professional guidelines, failure to turn in state and district tests were not big enough problems) and he was promptly forced to resign last week. I know a reporter for a local paper who loves this kind of stuff. Should I let him know about it? Or should I let my ex-principal slink off quietly and the district ignore its responsibility?

If I were in your situation then you bet I would call that reporter and let them know what's going on with the school district - if you just stay quiet then things will never change and will continue to be a problem for all those who live in your area!!! It's things like this that when people don't stand up to be heard - it will never get better and really you should stand up and let them know what's going on so that things can somehow change and then the schools can concentrate on what they are supposed to do which is to provide a safe education to the students!!! It's always a shame to hear these kinds of things happen in school districts!!! Our school district here - seems to care more about PR than the students!!! I helped to get rid of 1 teacher at my son's middle school because she admitted to myself as well as several other parents that she actually enjoyed intimidating her students - so bad that they were afraid to ask any questions in the class!! So she's now gone!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. But these things will always happen in school districts because (at least in the one I was in) putting the kids first is considered detrimental to your career - one is never supposed to speak against the bureaucrats' educational decisions. So many people who go into educ.admin are power hungry people too stupid to be successful in the corporate world.

You are so right about that!!! I know I get so disgusted upon seeing more and more that the school district my kids go to - they focus all about the PR!!!! And the school district employees really don't do a great job at handling matters!!! The principal at my oldest child's school is actually dumb enough to send out an email every Friday to all the parents and within that email contains everything she plans on doing that weekend - I am talking details about the who, when, where and what - which to me is definitely not information I would be sharing publicly with parents!!!! She really has no clue - and I guess isn't concerned about who knows where she will be and what she will be doing!!! I have already contacted the School Board about that and they are going to have a meeting with her so that she can somehow gain the understanding that you as the Principal of the school should not be stating personal information when emailing parents about the school!!!!! Just another bad apple that isn't where she should be!!!!
