Fighting terrorism with dolphins?

No, it's true. Evidently, the US Navy has 30 trained dolphins and sea lions they want to patrol the waters around the naval base Kitsap-Bagnor, which is by Seattle. These dolphins and sea lions have been trained to spot human divers and swimmers. When a dolphin has spotted an intruder they drop a beacon they were carrying. And the sea lions are trained to apprehend an intruder by attacking a cuff to the person and dragging them to authorities. You can read the article here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071213/ap_on_re_us/dolphin_defenders I just wanted to share this strange bit of news with everyone. Hahaha...am I the only one amused with "dolphin defenders?"

It does sound funny :Dolphin Defender (like the link address), yet I feel somehow uneasy for the dolphins... I always find dolphins to be a very gentle animal and we know story how dolphins are like man's best friend in the water/sea. I feel like we are forcing this wonderful babes to join our war in some way. But I also know that animals are created to equip man to live on this earth. I just hope that we don't "utilize" them more than we should be =)

darn it...the link is incorrect. Here it is if anyone wants to read the article. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070213/ap_on_re_us/dolphin_defenders It's a bit upsetting that they would use dolphins and sea lions like this. You would think there are sensors that could be placed in the water. It just doesn't seem safe.

Hi Anya, thanks for attaching the link, that was what I forgot to ask you before responding =), finally I got to read it... There's one interesting line : The Navy hopes eventually to downsize its marine mammal program and replace the animals with machines. "But the technology just isn't there yet." When God created this animals it was only by His words and yet it takes years and years for us to invent a technology that can function like these dolphins. It reminds me how great God really is =) Thanks Anya for posting this discussion!

SOunds interesting! I've never thought about it that one day people would come to think of using animals as defenders. They may be of great help but why of all, dolphins? why not whales or sharks? or any other fishes on the sea? I mean, dolphins are supposed to be harmless. ANd i'm afraid they might also be killed if there will be wars going on. THat would eventually make them endangered species. Sounds not good at all. :(
